So a UK Government minister has been criticised for asking why Britons are "so bloody miserable" despite the current economic problems.

BBC NEWS | Scotland | Glasgow, Lanarkshire and West | Minister defends 'miserable' jibe

Well I back him 100%, not just for daring to say it but for being absolutley right in what he says.

And as for 'The comments were denounced by shadow treasury chief secretary Philip Hammond, who accused him of living on a "different planet" from ordinary hard-working families.' WHAT THE f*** DOES A TORY SHADOW MINISTER KNOW ABOUT ORDINARY HARD WORKING FAMILIES? :lolol::lolol::lolol: God I hate politicians.

Abort, retry, fail
He does speak some sense in there. Brits are fairly miserable on the whole. One thing that would really buoy the nation is a few more BANK HOLIDAYS!

Edit: It is not entirely surprising that we are a depressed nation. We commute the furthest and have the least national holidays in Europe. Unsurprising that we are depressed and the traditional family has diminished.

i saw the headline on the Daily Moan and thought it was a bit rich. then i saw they were reporting a minister and i thought, yeah, but its the medias fault really. 6 months of negative headlines, doom and gloom, your house is going to half in value and the sky is falling, no wonder people are miserable.

Indeed, if I was considering topping myself a few days of reading the Daily Moan or Daily Express would send me on my way

My Mum and Dad live in Guildford which is one of the wealthiest places in Britain. They certainly ain't wealthy but that is where they reside.

It has to be one of the most miserable places I have ever been too. Go down to Brighton, completely different. All that money, all those nice houses, lovely countryside. Miserable, unfriendly, rude bastards. The last time I was there, someone had been spraying a stencil around town that simply said 'Smile Guildford'. Spot on.

Do you mean the Daily Hate when you say Daily Moan? Bit confused here.

If Guildford is miserable you should try Coventry. The people here have got to be the most miserable, aggresive twats on the planet.

England not making the Euros makes me miserable - especially now they're at the stage we'd normally be knocked out!

More to the point, what planet do you live on? I like tens of thousands of others are facing the prospect of negative equity over the coming months. Prices are soaring, and economic growth is slowing. So why the bloody hell should people be happy about this and, in any case, who the hell does the minister think he is, telling the electorate that they are wrong? THIS IS BREATHAKING LABOUR ARROGANCE! Gordon Brown repeatedly told us that he had brought to an end the cycle of 'boom and bust'! My arse.....this Government has a lot to answer for and people have every right to give them the kicking they deserve at the next election.

The Minister's comments have provoked some interesting reaction:

BBC NEWS | Have Your Say | Are Britons miserable?

It just seems to me that it's easy to blame Governments for everything rather than looking at ourselves. There was a programme on BBc2 this week where a miserable Brit (she had had a string of failed relationships etc etc) went to stay with a native tribe in Panama. They don't have the material wealth that we all do, they live in close family units where they look after each other and they have retained a real sense of community and tradition. And they seem happy.

What do we have in the civilised Western world? Fractured families, a desire to have more material posessions than the next person (which leads to much of the crime), media which promote wealth and posessions as our measurement of happiness (You can have it all!)

Actually, I think I'm turning into a Communist

Hmmmm. Were you around at the end of the eighties and early nineties? I'm not saying that Brown hasn't been an arse with the economy, but the Tories can't exactly claim a clear conscience on that either can they :lolol:

Agreed. But Ken Clarke did leave the economy in pretty good shape in '97. I remember back then that the Tories continuously brought up Labour's economic mismanagement in the late 70s as a reason not to vote for Blair, but it didn't work. In the same way, I can't see that harping on about Black Wednesday is going to help Gordon now!
