I went along to the red cross with the wife after 9-11 but they wouldn't take mine as I'm from England and probably have mad cow?

I'd already been living in this country 12 years.

As a Biomedical Scientist in Heamatology and Blood Transfusion, I have to say that this is the best thread I've read in a long while.

Red cell transfusions are used in many different senarios, ranging from serious trauma, to treatment of blood and bone marrow cancers such as leuckaemia and Hodgkins Disease, to patients whose lives depend on frequent transfusions such as thalassaemia.

You can donate red cells every 4 months, call 08457 711 711 or go to http://www.blood.co.uk/.

If your platelet (the little cells that initiate blood clotting after cutting yourself) count is above a certain level, you can donate platelets every few weeks (about once a month I think). This is also a vital service.

GET INVOLVED!!!! And remember, you get free tea, coffe and buscuits!!!

It honestly doesn't hurt that much and you really are savng someones life by doing so

I'm permanently banned from blood or bone marrow donations in Ireland - but looking at the UK blood transfusion services website, I'm not over there...

Over here there was a huge problem with un-screened blood products (Anti-D, I think?) with hepatitis C in the 1990s and as a result they have a massive list of diseases you can't donate blood if you've had.

People who've lived in the UK for a certain amount of time in the past 25 years or so are also barred, but my time in the frozen wastelands of Manchester don't add up to that.

Only something like 8% of people who could give blood actually do, I think that's shocking.

So many people expect blood to be available when they need it, but can't be arsed to help keep stocks up. Everyone who is able to should make an effort, particularly around the main holiday periods when a lot of regular donors are not around to donate.

I regularly give blood and have recently donated.

I also made a point at my last visit of giving a sample for the bone marrow register as well (after reading Starry/Anastasia's diary)

I have a STUPID phobia of needles which tend to lead to me going MENTAL and trying to pull them out of my arm.

I had tests done to see if I was suitable for bone marrow transplants, just waiting to see now I guess.

I was sent a letter yesterday about giving blood but every single session was on a weekday (when I'll be at work).

Also the suggested session was in Gloucestershire and I live in Wiltshire...

my mother-inlaw has just completed 75 donations.

I recevied 5 pints after a car accident when I was 14, I would encourage everyone to donate - you don't know when it could be you who needs the blood!
