Been rejected because I'm an insulin dependent diabetic,and an old one at that.

To answer the previous diabetic,I think the answer lies in blood glucose levels and the adverse effects this might have on any recipient.Any doctors on the board might tell me this is total tosh,but I do tosh,don't I readers?

Aye, that does sound sensible - although you'd have thought they would have come up with some way of combating that problem by now - there's a Hypo army of us out here wanting to give blood but not allowed to, let's face it, it's not like we'd have an issue with needles, is it?!

I started giving blood a few years ago when I worked in a large office, and the Blood Service used to park their truck in the car park for the day and get people to drop in.

I freely admit I started because it seemed like a great way to get out of the office (with the boss's blessing), which you could string out for around an hour by claiming you felt a bit faint, AND you get free drinks, crisps and biscuits



Hey, someone in desperate need of a few pints of the finest red stuff is hardly going to care what my motives were when I donated it, are they?


I also have an organ donor card, once I got over the "is it tempting fate to get one" element, I realised all the squishy bits inside me are no use once I've leapt off this mortal coil.

And I'd gladly donate any of them to you guys (can you specify on the card "Will not donate to Palace fans"? )

Partly due to personal interest, but I would whole-heartedly urge people to consider organ donation.

I will be requiring a kidney transplant in the (hopefully not too near) future along with something like 6,000 odd other people already on the waiting list in the UK. You could always consider living kidkey donation, you can live perfectly well with one - you struggle somewhat with none !

I want to, but I'm not sure if I can take it. I've got no problem with needles and I'm not squeamish or owt, but as a vegetarian with the build of a twig and veins the size of wires it always takes them at least 5 goes to get any blood, then they have to call specialists, then they have to try the other arm...by which time I always get faint for no apparent reason

Not allowed to give blood or bone marrow, am on the Organ Donor register though. Parents and sister have given shit loads of blood (Dad 50+ - stopped due to keep failing the anemia test . Mum 30+ -stopped due to medication, sister 30+ donations already)

I have given over 200 pints of blood, plasma and platelets and would encourage everyone to do as much as they can for this worthy cause.

Currently giving whole blood to a single person who suffers from Thallaseimia, after being matched to someone who needs transfusions every six to eight weeks. There are about a dosen donors linked to this one individual, and we give on a rotation basis. By giving blood you are helping someone to live a longer and (hopefully) better life, do some good today if you can.

But, I also think that there should be an 'opt out' rather than an 'opt in' for organ donation in this country as most of us want to help when we kick the bucket but never get around to doing it. It would also make the task of asking grieving relatives a lot easier if someone had elected not to come off of the register.

Absolutely it should be. I think there is something like 6,000 people waiting for kidney transplants in this country.

That is like the situation we were in with Stasia. They found a perfect match for bone marrow from a perfect stranger (who is now almost like a son thanks to his willingness to be in touch with us at the time) and his donations kept her alive for four months. She would have passed away almost as soon as the cancer was in her liver had it not been for him.

I don't think people always put the donation=saving life thing together, I know before Anastasia I used to donate and it was just one of those things. But now I have seen how it can change someone's life completely and it is such a simple thing. I almost wish it were compulsory. (And the opt out donation thing)

I was always a regular blood donor until the rules changed a few years, and because I had a transplant in 1987 I am now not allowed to donate (to do with the risk of CJD I think). I was registered on the bone marrow register - all you have to do is ask when you go blood doning and they will take an extra pot of blood and send it to the marrow people (at least, thats what happened a few years ago, I'm not sure if its changed). I also carry an organ donor card.
My husband, and three older kids aged 21, 20 and 18 have also been blood donors since their 17th birthday. The next child is only 16, but has epilepsy..does anyone know whether that will prevent her donating? She's very used to having blood taken and is keen to do so, but we are not sure whether they will accept it.
