Leg out of the bed
...and bloody right too

Parked on the zig-zags leading up to a pelican crossing

I felt like shouting, 'Good one officer! The bloke is too lazy to park properly and is obscuring the view of the crossing for approaching traffic, and someone could be killed or injured. Hope the three points gets him a ban! Knobber!'

The reason these areas are usually clear, is because most people know the hazard they would cause by parking on them, and if the don't, three points and a fine should be the minimum penance

Very much this. The whole of Lewes Road is a nightmare as far as the cycle lane is concerned. One side the two furniture shops always have their vans parked in the cycle lane. The other side all the way along you have cars parked for people just nipping in to shops. Add in the number of buses pulling out and cars pulling out of the side roads or in to them without regard for the cycle lane then it is a death trap for cyclists. Personally I do not use the cycle lane along here at busy times but ride in the stream of traffic as it is safer but most do not feel confident about doing this.

In general I entirely disagree with cycle lanes in town as they just reinforce the idea among some drivers that roads are only for cars. Now your A roads and main trunk routes were built for cars and mixing vehicles doing 10mph with those doing 60plus is crazy and they need cycle lanes or parallel cycle routes. (as an aside the N20 parallel to A/M23 is awful)

Is that a contravention though? 'Parked in a cycle lane'? Never seen a PCN for it and I go on pepipoo forums (motorists fightback site against PCNs) a fair bit.

Agree about the idiot on the zigzags at a pedestrian crossing though!

Are the Rozzers going to go after all those cyclists who feel that they have immunity to pass through red lights ?

Bricycles - Campaigning for cyclists in Brighton and Hove - Police to fine Lewes Road cycle lane parking!

Police to fine Lewes Road cycle lane parking!

Sussex Police has been given authority to issue non-endorsable £30 tickets to vehicles parked in advisory cycle lanes for the offence of 'Causing an unnecessary obstruction.' According to a Police spokesperson "this is an offence that the issuing officer needs to see first hand."

The Police are currently in the process of speaking to businesses in the Lewes Road area and will be fixing information boards to lamp posts. They will then start patrolling the Lewes Road area and taking positive action against cars found parked in these lanes.

Bricycles has campaigned for more than 10 years to stop cars parking in the Lewes Road cycle lanes, particularly the Coombe Terrace and Pelham Terrace sections. We hope that at long last the Police are going to take some real action to stop this thoughtless and dangerous practice.

I don't know if 'parking in a cycle lane' is a contravention, but I'm sure parking on double yellows is, and I believe there are double yellows in the bike lane at that point.

Isn't causing an obstruction also a contravention? (The bit I'm thinking of, at the bottom of Elm Grove is just past the lights and often causes trouble for buses, who also have to navigate the crossing island, and some times the queue of traffic on the other side of the road because of the parked cars).

What are my rights when a cyclist while ridng across the corner of a pavement onto the wrong side of the road as I approach a junction, nearly ends up in my windscreen ?

This happened this morning on my way to work.... fortunately, although carrying a large plastic bag in his left hand, his right was on the handlebar so he was able to swerve and brake and just stay on the pavement.

Absolutely. The cycle lane on Ditchling Road can also be a car park at times.

I think cyclists should have to buy insurance in case they hit someone.

When I was in holland recently I saw about 3 nasty accidents involving bikes and pedestrians

I think we should just force these crazy cycle lane cyclists back on the pavement where they can crash in to pedestrians without hurting themselves too much.
