Finally, some unprecedented generosity and sportsmanship. I was thinking he'd blame it on Fletcher missing the game.

SAF has mellowed, and even the most one eyed fan could not argue that the better team won tonight.

The better team won on the night without doubt, but I thought the United players and staff were very dignified in defeat.

Yes, they were obviously gutted, but none of them sat on the ground crying their eyes out and all stood out on the pitch to watch Barcelona being presented with the trophy & did not leave until they started their lap of honour.

Without naming names, there are a few other teams & players out there that could learn a lot from their example.

Well done United.

Agree with all of that. And isn't it surprising how short this thread is compared to those on the subject of ripping into Man Utd. Let's have some congratulations from the anti-Man Utd brigade on here for dignity shown in defeat.

Its a shame that the average football fan talks of his hate before his love nowadays.

On 5Live wednesday morning they had coverage of the Utd. fans leaving from Manchester airport. The fans were "bouyant " to say the least about the result, which involved a fair few of them singing " Are you watching Merseyside ? " I always was led to believe that you don't mouth off until you have it in the bag.

Liverpool would have loved to have been there in rome tonight. I think thats what they meant vegster.

I was trying to convey that the Utd fans thought at that time was not one of winning glory for themselves and for an English team, merely the hatred of Liverpool, and premature gloating.

It's rather shocking that it should be worth commenting on. When I were a lad, I was brought up to be a good loser, as were most of us. Now showing dignity in defeat is something worthy of congratulation - that's an indication of how times have changed.

A classic from a Utd fan interviewed on 5Live this morning.... " We'll be back and we will win it for sure next season, we were overconfident and just didn't perform tonight " :shootself

Totally. Gwylan. After the Chelsea debacle I said there really was no alternative to simply shaking hands and saying "well played". It sounded terribly old-fashioned - but that is still as true today as it was when we were being taught about winning and losing in our youth.

It was a lesson I passed onto the youth team I managed - and they will be better people for it.

Well done United.
