As soon as TV pictures showed the ball did in fact cross the line, I was waiting for Blatter to call for goal-line technology. FIFA are so anti-English it's laughable.

It'll have to be done like the review system in cricket where they check for a no ball when they review a decision. Every action in the build up to the goal would have to be looked at.

Exactly

The timing is INTERESTING though, to say the least. As a goal being given would've been the WRONG decision.

Where's the calls for OFFSIDE technology?

its often overlooked in the debate isnt it?

however, i think its precisly why they have been resistant to goal line tech, opens the door etc. just how would you do offside, as you have to monitor both the defender/attacker line and the player with ball. its one of those, simple in principle but probably computationally massivly difficult things to do. tracking 3 irregular 6x2 foot shapes and a ball in real time doesnt sound trivial.

I was only mucking about with my comment about OFFSIDE tech, actually...

Love how everyone has been calling for it for a while now, but as soon as something goes in England's favour he suddenly agree's. Absolute p***, along with the rest of UEFA.

1. As others have pointed out, he's been calling for it for a while now, after the 2010 WC when the decision went AGAINST England - see here: BBC Sport - Goal-line technology edges closer

2. Blatter is FIFA, not UEFA.

Come on, keep up!

English team wins the CL on pens, Blatter wants rid of penalties.
England gets away with ball crossing line, Blatter wants goal line tech.

I'd like the Goal Line technology, but only if they check for offside at the same time as Triggaaar suggests, if there had been GL technology last night, it would have been given as a goal, but it was definitely offside.
I'd like a 3rd umpire to be able to check big decisions (penalties, goals, red cards). At the top level, they could check a goal is not offside while the players celebrate, it wouldn't slow down the game at all. Same with cards and penalties, it wouldn't take a minute and they change a game.

Its a very complex 3-D modelling system, using multiple cameras and Local Area transponder-based Tracking systems. It already exists. The company I work for produce one (amongst others).

I can sell you one, if you like, for roughly £400k.

It does however require all the players to wear a transponder (woven into the shirts, etc), and it can't produce the results in real time (which is the FIFA requirement for goal-line tech).

And just wait till we beat the Italians on pens on Sunday night.

Blatter tried to park the issue for a few months after the 2010 World Cup fiasco but was then "persuaded" to take it seriously and commence trials. He and Platini are fanatically anti-England so very predictable that he shot his mouth off about last night's incident. He is implying that it all evens out in the end whether you have the technology or not. They have to do something about offside and wrestling at corners though. These situations occur much more often. Offside decisions are very diffcult to judge in real time from the sideline, especially if the ref's assistant is shit.

I can't see the need for goalline technology when the officials behind the goals are doing such a good job.

Very much this. I would LOVE offside technology. I know he was off side yesterday, but more often than not the flag goes up for offside when it is a borderline call. I reckon we'd see loads more goals if play was allowed to continue with the benefit of the attacking team. I'd like to see that, with the defending side allowed up to two offside reviews a game, much as it works in cricket.

You can see it now:

"...and the decision sponsored by Wonga.com is OFFSIDE"
