Just seen Blair on the news. Seemed pretty obvious from his whole relaxed demeanour that he don't give a flyer anymore what happens about the European Constitution Referendum. Or maybe about anything else either. He just looked like a man who had handed in his notice and has had the whole weight of the world lifted off his shoulders.

I read somewhere that Tony Blair is going to step down after the election and will be replaced by Gordon Brown. I think the war on Iraq has taken its toll on him and he is probably one of those leaders who can cope when things are going fairly smoothly, but not so able to cope with continuing criticism. Not only has there been the war on Iraq but he has received immense criticism, fairly in my view, for neglecting our own issues.

I think Labour 97/04 have been the most dissapointng government in history, they had 2 landslide majorities and did nothing with it. Can you name 1 just 1 thing they have done that will make a lasting difference to our lives. I can't, infact I think the Tories at 3/1 to win the next election are a damn good bet.

Well, the tories ain't gonna win the next electoion, that's for sure. The memory of their last piss-poor attempt to govern is still too recent for many. Not that the current shower are any better, of course.

There is a brilliant article by Jonathan Freedland in today's Guardian - highly recommended for all critics of Blair, whether on domestic policy or foreign policy (or both!). It doesn't matter if you think the war was a wonderful undertaking but he is just a left-wing twat at home, or if you think his domestic policies are great but that he has proved to be a right-wing twat abroad (or if you believe like me that he is just a twat, full stop) - you'll all find something to agree with in this article regarding his psychology. You should find it on the website easily enough, headline title 'He knows he is right'.

I do not believe Blair is a "twat" as you so elequently put it.

I think he is a genuine person who passionately believes in what he stands for. But therein lies the problem which affects almost every politician you can name. They go into government and are instantly ambushed by this huge civil service machine that really runs the country.

From all the writings of the "serious" papers, Blair did believe that there were WMD in Iraq. He was told this by the Security Services, the military and the Americans. He was told that Iraq had produced long range missiles that could hit British targets in Cyprus. Saddam made sure that the weapons inspectors were sent on wild goose chases and chose to push and push until the USA and GB/Spain/Australia finally said enough is enough and went in and bopped him.

Now we have people jumping up and down and crying "civil liberties" when people are detained by the security services as possible terrorists and blaming Blair for this. What should Blair and the Government do...wait for a bomb to go off in London comitting mass murder?

Getting back to Blair....he hasn't looked well for the last year or so and it would not surprise me in the slightest if he stepped down for his health sake. Who will replace him? Brown probably, but he is hardly Mr Personality is he? As for the Tories....Michael Howard as PM...God help us. Oliver Lewin etc etc. No thanks

The point of the article I was suggesting, in fact! (i.e. that he knows he is right - and continues to know he is right, even after it has been proved he is wrong)

That, of course, is what makes him a twat.

Thats a rather confident prediction considering what could happen in a year! suicide bombings etc.

Elections tend to be lost by Governments not won by opposition parties anyway.

You need to upgrade your political knowledge.:nono:

I bow to your superiour knowledge

I was under the impression it was an article written by a journalist and not fact merely opinion, and secondly I was also not aware that there was "proof" that he was wrong.

Blair IMHO will not win or loose the next election due to his own skill or mismanagement which ever way you look at it....

Circumstances external will dictate.... the USA and Europe's conundrums will have an enormous effect on the voting population - its what he does about it that will effect the outcome...Have these issues so overtaken the thoughts of the voting population will dictate how he choses to fight...

You misunderstand me (or I didn't make myself clear - for which, sorry).

Freedland's point is a general one (in fact, the issue of a need for a referendum on the European constitution was the impetus behind the article). He is saying that Blair knows he is right, even when something he knows is right contradicts something else he knows (or knew) to be right. He was not wrong in the past and is correct now; but correct in the past and correct now.

I see...I think?

There is a belief that he is having a referendum which he will be defeated due to the "popular press" being so anti europe, so he can go back to the EU and say " look I agree with you but my people have said no...what can I do"

The interesting thing will be if the EU do their normal trick and if the vote is NO, not accept it and ask the country to go back and have votes until they say YES.
