Black managers...where are they?

These things take time. 30 or so years ago (well, maybe 40) the only black players were a couple each at West Brom and Weat Ham - can't remember their names. Cyrille Regis was one of them?

There should be positive discrimination, and it should start with John Barnes being the next Palace manager, then give Stanley Colleymore a shot at the Saints job.

Erm isn't the number of black managers in England just about right?

According to the 2007 census Demography of England - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia 2.8% of England's population is black or black British.
2 black managers out of 92 clubs is 2.2%

That is pretty bang on what you would expect surely from a demographic like that of England?

The real question should now be how many managers are Jedi's - are they properly represented are in league football or are they discriminated against?

Could take mind tricks to a whole new level during the build up to important matches

The most curious thing..
The survey isn't very good - the questions are leading, and they are also asking for peoples opinions on things they will know little or nothing about, so the answers are inevitably going to be ill-informed, prejudiced, or merely speculation.

And Question 3 is sexist.

I'm not so sure. I would imagine that there is a significantly higher percentage of black players in British football than 2.2%.

The telling statistic would be those that take the various coaching badges.

There may be now, but was there 20 years ago when most current managers were playing. I very much doubt it.

Football is a white mans game, always has been - why is that suprising....its not racist, its like black men rowing or chinese men high jumping, or either of them paying rubgy....it isn't racist - just how it is!

Did you organise the Olympics in 1936 ?

Race plays a part in the success in many sports, but football isn't one of them.

Could be, I have no idea. My point was that you can not expect more than 2 black managers in England given the demography of England. 2 in 92 is about right. So if there were more the question would have to be "Why are there so many black managers in English football?"

Exactly

i wonder how true that is. given that the black population is only 2%, i'd expect no more than that percentage to excel in any field. education is quite accessible to everyone who wants it. from experience at uni, culturally black people are less interested in acedemic subjects, they are more interested in practical areas - law, medicine, engineering. Professions in themselves they stick with them, adopting roles that dont necessarily lead into managment and high profile positions within organisations.

Interesting demographic statistic, if that is true then on the playing side the black population is definitely over represented in comparison to their demographic......I guess we'll get a survey on the discriminated white population that next week.

Get a proper job mate.

There is a recession and a toff prime minister who wants to sling many public sector workers on the dole. Stick your meaningless survey and statistics up your polytechnic.

A bit harsh.

I'm looking forward to a fans survey on community gardens next.

Like others I couldn't do the survey. Multiple choice works fine when the question is something like "What year was the Battle of Hastings?" but for more complex and nuanced questions there is often no, er, 'black and white' answer. The available responses for the Cyrille Regis question are especially simplistic - and asinine.

Pity it wouldn't let me only answer one question as the one on there where I WOULD answer a definitive 'no' is the 'Rooney' question about whether there should always be a 'token ethnic' on any shortlist. No. No. No.

I can see why someone might ask that question.

While UK blacks may only make up 2.8% of the overall population, football player wise they would make up a larger % of the player base.

That is then when the question may be asked "why?".

That is a quality response to a very strange post. I wonder if that is what they think in Africa, South America, or Asia ?

I can see what Tedebear is trying to say. Up until the 80s/90s there weren't many black players in this country therefore it was very much a white mans game in Britain (that's where we're talking about, South America and Africa are irrelevant). Obviously that has changed massively over the last 20 years but there's two causes going on here 1) The influx of foreign players to the premier league coupled with the rise of African football during the same period = lots of African players in the premier league.
2) There's still an element of immigration in the 50s and 60s taking time to get on a level playing field with the rest of society. Lots of black british people must be on their 3rd or 4th generation by now.

The fact is, there have been a fair few black managers over the last 15 years.

Not just the current two, but Gullit, Tigana, Barnes, Rosenior, Alexander, etc.

However, despite many of the responses on here to this (poor) survey, there obviously IS still predjudice in some boardrooms. Whilst people here have used the stat that the % of managers matches the demographic, you could equally state that, if 20% of the population is racist (MADE UP number) then a significant number of decision makers in football will be too.

The bottom line though, is that we have yet to see a very SUCCESSFUL black manager. Once that happens, things will change.

If Alex Ferguson were black*, there'd be 10 black managers in the top two divisions (just like now they're all JOCKS).

Of course, he'd probably never have got out of 1960's Govan alive...
