Black managers...where are they?

Thanks to those who helped with my previous research on homophobia and video technology in football.

I'm working on an online survey with a colleague at Staffordshire University on fans' views towards the lack of black managers or coaches in professional football. Chris Powell and Paul Ince are the only two black managers out of 92 involved in either the Premier or Football League. It would be great to hear your thoughts on this. The address is: BLACK FOOTBALL MANAGERS ... WHERE ARE THEY? - it will only take you 2 minutes (8 questions). Thanks in advance.

What surveys will be following next:

Ginger Managers
Tall Managers
Short Managers
Green eyed Managers
Managers who sleep with their kit man

Have they nothing better to do?

Not just a problem affecting the UK, less than 3% of all managers of professional football teams in Europe are black.

Why not investigate the lack of black or white curry house managers?

Football is a white mans game, always has been - why is that suprising....its not racist, its like black men rowing or chinese men high jumping, or either of them paying rubgy....it isn't racist - just how it is!

Oh and female managers - same scenario - I'd be a better manager than about 3/4's of them - but would I try? f*** no...the standards I'd be set are higher than Alex Ferguson, and yet if I'd fail - it'd all be ok as I'm female....

Rubbish question and a rubbish questionnaire.

For a start, you are force feeding a view, TWO quotes from one late manager and a former player - Did Cyrille Regis try his hand at management?

I'm not sure what you are hoping to gain from this study. This is not a question for the fans/followers of football. We don't know the ins and outs of employment in the world of football. We don't know how many black former players have applied for positions and why they have been rejected. A fans opinion means nothing when we do not know the ins and outs. I'm not quite sure what you are trying to gather?

Why not contact former professional black players and ask them what they did to enter management, whether they felt the door was shut on them and so on and so forth? They are in a much better position to answer any sort of question on your site than fans guessing/prothesising on an important subject.

What do you think your results will show and what will it tell you?

Have you spoken to Luther Blissett? I would be interesting to see what his take on your disparaging attitude towards his managerial career is.

From Wiki...

In May 2002, he moved to York City to carry out a coaching role.[11] He later left that post and on 15 February 2006 was appointed manager of Southern League team Chesham United. However, in April 2007 it was announced that Blissett would leave Chesham at the end of the season to concentrate on his involvement with the Windrush Motorsport project that aims to enter the Le Mans 24 hour race.[12]

On 27 March 2010, it was confirmed that Blissett had signed to Hemel Hempstead Town as a coach

Does this sound like a man that is deadset on winning the Premier League or a man that wants a casual involvement in football, but not to dominate his whole life?

I've got a spare morning tomorrow. I would happily help you track down addresses and contact details of a decent number of former black players and then question them as to why they didn't become managers. Far more worthwhile and meaningful.

Terry Connor is assistant manager at Wolves. But I guess as that is the "Black Country" this doesn't count?

It's not just football managers, black people are statistically less likely to excel in almost any type of job. It is of my believe that this is because both culturally and financially, education is less accessible to them, even these days.

i wonder how true that is. given that the black population is only 2%, i'd expect no more than that percentage to excel in any field. education is quite accessible to everyone who wants it. from experience at uni, culturally black people are less interested in acedemic subjects, they are more interested in practical areas - law, medicine, engineering. Professions in themselves they stick with them, adopting roles that dont necessarily lead into managment and high profile positions within organisations.

So just 2% are black in this country?

And 2 out of 92 are black managers?

Hmm survey complete, agenda over then

Don't expect a long response from someone like John Barnes, Carlton Palmer or Chris Kamara if you ask them why they are not still in management. Were they shit because they were black? No. They were just shit and not managerial material, seemingly.

I am assuming 'TheAcademic' will be able to tell us how many black players have UEFA badges and the success rate at that stage. Well?

Erm isn't the number of black managers in England just about right?

According to the 2007 census Demography of England - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia 2.8% of England's population is black or black British.
2 black managers out of 92 clubs is 2.2%

That is pretty bang on what you would expect surely from a demographic like that of England?

I'm not so sure. I would imagine that there is a significantly higher percentage of black players in British football than 2.2%.

The telling statistic would be those that take the various coaching badges.
