You can get this through Amazon or with Hive and get an Echo dot free. Got one last year and added some of the hive bulbs which are activated by ‘Alexa’ good piece of kit at a good price with British Gas installation for the thermostat.

Quite a bit cheaper at Amazon right now (I'm tempted in fact)

Hive + Free Echo Dot (no installation) - £108.99 -> https://amzn.to/2OOvFBK
Hive + Free Echo Dot (with professional installation) - £148.99 -> https://amzn.to/2Tn53eI

For Echo, see Laserdisc or Mini Disc. Saw one in a car boot being offered for £20 last month as an unwanted birthday present! 3 hours later as I was leaving it was still there. Why would anyone want such a crap device?
I've just ordered my 4th. Have you tried using one for an extended period?

Technology evolves.

For your example, VHS > Laserdisc > DVD > Blu Ray > Netflix.... Vinyl > Casette > CD > Minidisc > MP3 > Cloud.

We are less naive as consumers these days, and are fully aware that Echo will evolve into something better in the future.

If you like the idea of a hands-free radio, that also doubles up as an alarm, timer and smart home assistant... then the Echo is not a crap product.

Actually 20 quid for a dot, I think I might try one. I was gonna spend a tenner on an alarm clock anyway. Anyone idea if it works with Deezer? (or is that a dumb question, I have no idea)

or £25 quid for the 3rd gen?? https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0792KWK57

Am very happy to select my own tunes - can Alexa connect to my 10-15 year old (pre AI) stereo system and if so how?
Yes. Cheap cable from Alexa into the stereo. 'Alexa, play Little Richard'. Job done.

Do you need to purchase special lighting to have it dim your lights or can it somehow just do this?
Yes, so don't bother using that function.

I have a timer on my cooker, but why use that when I can just ask alexa while my hands are full?

Both vinyl and cassettes making a come back, and CDs aren't dead yet.

If you’re tech savvy enough to need to ask that question, I’d say you should be more than able to find out the answer yourself :thumbsup:

Well I have an arduino and Raspberry PI here, but I want an out the box quick solution for um, a little prank at work. I saw someone on Youtube running some BI stuff with an alexa but I think he wrote a java or c# plug in/extension (and I'm not a programmer, just enough bits to be dangerous at Christmas...) :angel:

Whats the likelihood of getting one any idea fellas? Not done this before. Would you need to queue at stupid o'clock to stand a chance of picking up this kind of deal?

If anything jumps out on Amazon at you can you post it so I can you the NSC link (£200 quid or there abouts. Price is more important than even size due to its intended usage really as a 2nd screen though I'd want 33" plus but not bigger than this one)

In Curry's the other day and I see they are doing a Samsung 8k TV for £14999!

I'm only just getting used to 4k which is immense but 8k already? Will there be 16k in a couple of years? Anyone thinking of an 8k telly?

I've had 2 different Echos and neither have had audio outlets, only bluetooth and wi-fi.

Do the new models have physical audio outlets? That would be very useful.
Did you have the standard Echo? The Echo Dots (cheaper and smaller) should have them. They have a 3.5mm out.
