To be fair, if you can afford a £200k watch, you can probably afford to lose it.

Not that it makes the actual attack any more palatable, but he could just as well have been wearing a much cheaper watch that looked just as flash and it wouldn't change anything.

It probably wasn’t the watch that put him in danger. More than likely career muggers who saw two people in a flash car pulling up to a 5 star hotel in Cannes at 4am and got lucky that this time one of them happened to have a ridiculously expensive watch on.
