March 2014-note the cottage closest to the cliff edge has now been dismantled on safety grounds

Apparently the cottages date from 1800 to 1820 and were the second set in the area,as an earlier set of 5 (i am still trying to find evidence of this) were abandoned in the early 18th century...

I find the area fascinating and it just goes to show the power of nature..

That block of cottages looks about half the current size in length, you sure the 5 weren't as attached in the original making 10?!?

I think what the OP is trying to say is their were originally five there but they have been rebuilt. The original 5 were built around 1800-20 but were replaced by the current set in around 1880.

If the OP is looking for evidence he should go to http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html type in Birling Gap then compare the layout of cottages on the 1875 1:2,500 scale map with the next available edition from 1899 1:2,500, the latter match up to his 1906 photo the former do not.
