Yep. Is the same if you go to book a cheap day return from Victoria. Far pricier to go from Victoria to Brighton than vice versa.

Its often cheaper to buy split tickets on the same route A-C-D-B than just A-B, you can still be sat on the same trains except rather than a return from Brighton to victoria, you have a return from Brighton to Gatwick and a return from gatwick to victoria, nearly always cheaper. Just looked and for Brighton - Birmingham Peak time travel splitting ticket into 5 segments is over £100 cheaper
