I remember a few years back when we played them there was something in one of the newspaper reports about Plymouth being the largest city outside of Hull never to have hosted top flight football.

The city doesn't become larger with more people in it, it just becomes more crowded/populated. So 'largest city' will not be affected by population.

So, Albion Rob's comment that Brighton isn't a big city but when you add the population of Hove, is irrelevant as, without including Hove, you are only talking about part of a city.

brighton used to be a town and is now part of a city

brighton has never been a city

the figure above for bradford applies to 'city of bradford' which includes several other towns

the same goes for the 'wakefield' that is on that list

bradford is definitely smaller than manchester and liverpool

no, because brighton & hove HAS been represented in the top flight, regardless of it's status at the time

and the question is about 'top flight' not 'premiership', so it's not cardiff either
