Thanks for all the advise. I went into in-gear in Uckfield who were very helpful. Some fab bikes but very expensive, one costing £8000. I'm after a road/sports bike. We have a great bike shop in Heathfield so there are plenty of places to get good advice from. Can anyone recommend a good bike shop in Brighton?
Have a look in 'Raymonds' at Preston Circus. It's on your left as you walk up New England Road In that little square of shops. Really nice shop if you got some money to spend..

Sober Stat is back.

£300 - £500 is pretty much the optimum entry level price point across all ranges and suppliers of bikes.
It's currently cycling's traditional sales time, where stores are keen to clear out old stock at the end of the season, so there are bargains to be had.

I would suggest you try as many bikes as you can, from different manufacturers.
Although at £500 'a bike is a bike' they will all be subtly different in shape, after just a few tries I'm sure you'll be able to pick up on this, and realise how comfy they can be.

Evans is good for this, but your Local Bike Shop (sorry I don't know what B'ton has to offer) although limited in stock will look after you mechanically for ever more.

As I slurred last night The Boardman range is the best but that goes hand in hand with Halfords, you pays your money...

Evans in Air Street off Queens Road has a good range and does interest-free credit for bikes over £300- over 12 months!!

At that budget all decent brand mountain bikes are pretty much the same, the only difference will be if you want low end disc brakes or not. You're doing the most important thing right which is buying from a local bike shop who know how to build and service the bikes properly.

my mate just got a 'specialized' for £500 - great entry level mountain bike and was put through its paces by 'mountain bike uk' recently, got great review. I have a 10 year old Marin and it has never given a problem and I give it a tough time off road, really strong bike and light as a feather.

Willing to spend £300 to £500 on new bike. Marin, Trek, Sirrus or Giant. Any advice

What do you want to use the bike for? I have several different type of bikes for different uses. And how many miles a year. I cycle 3000+ so reliability is a big issue for me.

dont go to hafords they are appalling . the bike was crap and when they gave it its first service they f***ed it up to the point where it changed gears on its own and i nearly came off in front of a lorry. i got a refund and got mine from evans (thanks to people on here who gave me advice) i went in to get a trek 7.1 fx (hybrid bike but more leaning towards a road bike) and came out with a trek 7.3 fx for the same price as they had one out of the back which was a demonstrator .

Tip 1.) Buy local, when your bike needs a bit of care the original shop will appreciate that you purchased it from them and will treat you accordingly.
Tip 2.) A full priced bike will be marked up by 50% in a shop, bear this in mind when negotiating.

To cycle 1 km you will expend the energy in 1 potatoes
To walk 1km you will expend the energy held within 3 potatoes
A car will expend the energy of 60 potatoes on the same journey

Cars are shit
