BHAFC to run Withdean?

OK - I'm confused. I've been away all week so might have missed a thread about this. The guy who sits in front of me was telling me yesterday that Ecovert have lost the contract to run Withdean and that the Albion will take over. This will mean keeping advertising revenue etc and be worth £500000 a year to the club.

Anybody else know anything about this? If true then it would be a plan B if we don't get Falmer.

Here's the text of the press release :-

press release 19 February 2004
New team to run sport and leisure facilities

A company has been selected to manage a number of major leisure facilities for Brighton & Hove City Council.

Surrey-based DC Leisure Management will take over the management of the Prince Regent Swimming Complex, St Luke’s Swimming Pool, Stanley Deason Leisure Complex and Moulsecoomb Community Leisure Centre.

Their work managing Withdean Sports Complex will include liaising with Brighton & Hove Albion for home games.

Most facilities were previously run by Ecovert, who did not bid for the work.

Staff will transfer on existing terms and conditions.

Also included in the five-year contract, starting April 1, are the seafront playground and the Level and Saunders Park paddling pools.

The tender was advertised in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU), the standard publication for advertising large council contracts.

Twelve companies registered an interest in the work, with four eventually submitting a formal bid last December.

Environment Councillor Gill Mitchell said: “DC Leisure has a good reputation within the industry.

“We’ll be working in close partnership with them to develop the range of activities and ensure a good standard of service for local people and visitors.”

Surrey-based DC Leisure Management currently runs over 100 leisure centres in the UK and employs 6,800 staff. It will seek to improve the service by introducing a state-of-the-art computerised booking system, plus new branding.

Mark Evans, regional operations director of DC Leisure Management says: “We are delighted to work in partnership with the council to assist them in achieving their wider corporate objectives. We look forward to working with the existing staff at the facilities and believe that their local knowledge, coupled with our leisure management expertise, will ensure a high quality leisure experience for residents of Brighton & Hove”.

Anybody know what impact this has on us?

We will run the stadium on match days

It will save us a lot of money - basically Ecovert's profit, plus advertising and catering concessions - although unfortunately not in the same league as the Great Cornhillo suggests as we will still be renting the stadium and the infrastructure.

All stewards will become employees of BHAFC - transferring from Ecovert.

Takes effect around the end of March.

ecovert were responsible for the maintenance of many areas within the city including waterhall golf course, hollingbury golf course, the pitches at sussex university that the albion train on and of course withdean stadium.

they were also resposible (i think) for running leisure facilities such as withdean - tennis, gym etc.

many of the problems with the training ground and the pitch at withdean have been caused by their lack of interest in spending money and time on the maintenance of these sites. the albion are not able to do any of the 'hands on work' to the pitches with their own staff. much of the moans from past managers relating to the training facilities at sussex uni have not been the fault of the albion or sussex uni. the training facilities have been a joke.

the improvements at withdean on the pitch have been remarkable, due to professional staff within the club ensuring the work gets done. sometimes it seems that ecovert were doing everything they could to be a pain in the arse.

the day the albion have control of their own pitch will be a huge relief to many!

The Club take over the running of the stadium on match days. They will manage stewarding, event management (cleaning etc) and catering. The catering will be contracted by the Club, advertsing revenue will also go to the Club.

Starts 1st April.

I posted on this before. There is something on the Argus Albion site about the Albion saving £500K a year on this scheme.

Ecovert was not mentioned, but I'd guessed that their contract had come to an end.
