Can we ban betting advertising altogether please? As well as possibly saving many thousands from starting something that may end in crippling debts, it might force the closure of TalkSport radio.

If people want to bet, they will bet - as long as there is a service there.
The only way betting will slow down is if it becomes stigmatised, or unfashionable. Think Drink Driving and Smoking - both things which ruined lives through accidents and disease which have become something generally frowned upon, whereas 40 years ago they were perfectly normal things to do - and most people did.

Yep and the Championship. Because they have very deep pockets and can pay top dollar. Most of them aren't even British brands.
Crazy people are advocating this on here given how the person bank rolling our club has and continues to make his money. Also crazy that people are happy to see millions if not billions taken out of the game given the state of the world at the moment.
It will happen as people need a crusade....won't change anything as the tobacco industry proves.

I actually find it baffling that yet again football is being demonized.
Without even getting into the should betting sponsorship be allowed debate.... to recommend it should be stopped in football yet allowed to carry on in other sports is yet again blaming football and it’s supporters as ‘the problem’
Also in the current climate I do think restricting the avenues football clubs (especially further down the ladder) can maximize their revenues isn’t great for the game either.
Gambling addiction is obviously a terrible issue and should be looked at.... but I don’t think banning shirt sponsorship is going to change much. Perhaps the amount of TV advertising could be reduced but there are far better ways to try and help people than just banning sponsorship.

Prohibition of anything that people actually want to do just drives it underground. The gambling industry does need to be more regulated and more done to ensure the vulnerable (and addicted) are better protected but in the end there will always be those who want to bet on something. Once you drive it underground it gets controlled by organised crime and the government also lose out on tax revenue which has to be got from elsewhere.
Also my father used to be a professional punter and consistently made money at it for many years. To say that the industry only causes suffering is very much a blinkered view

There are plenty of unfortunates out there who are hooked on gambling and would continue regardless of whether it's legal or not. Ban gambling and instead of them pissing their money away at 888.com we'll be back to the day's of bookies runners and debts being collected via damaged kneecaps. Loads of people gambled long before online gambling appeared and long before the legalisation of high street bookies in 1960. The facts that so many gamblers were out there was one of the main drivers of that legalisation.
When something popular is banned the only beneficiaries of that prohibition are the organised crime gangs, that much we know from history, especially the early part of the 20th century

Some will see no harm in gambling sponsors because "it's a choice" and "you don't have to bet".
Others, like myself, think it must be sodding difficult if you've got a gambling addiction to see gambling firms plastered over the shirts, hoardings, matchday programmes and TV and radio adverts and have to resist the urge to put a few quid down.
