For me it would be, For A Few Dollars More. (Or perhaps Soldier Blue)
Not the best western, not even in its own trilogy. The good, The Bad & The Ugly was the best of those three. But for me the best western ever (including the film with the best score) was Once Upon A Time In The West.

The opening scene is one of awesome tension and drama.

Once Upon A Time in the West goes on for about two weeks though. I was nearly chewing my own arm off by the end.

True Grit

The one where Clint Eastwood returns to the town that left him to die at the hands of some desperados.

Dances with Wolves is not half bad either.

Tombstone is marvellous as well.

Ringo: "You're so drunk, probably seein' double."

Doc: "I have two guns. One for each of ya."

Oh, OK - I'll give you G, B & U.

My favourtie bit - the end bit with the showdown featuring all three of them, with the harsh trumpet blaring out over the top. Excellent.

Best ending to a western ever in that huge graveyard - and only Blondie knows the name of the grave where the gold is buried.

"You see, in this world there's two kinds of people, my friend......those with loaded guns, and those who dig. You dig."

Soo-perb.

The music is just stunning as well, not just the famous hyena theme, but the separate symphony as Eli Wallach dances through the cemetery.
"For A Few Dollars" more is stunning, though, too - Lee Van Cleef's watchchain, just haunting... Ah, but Clint's demands for an apology to his horse, in "A Fistful Of Dollars", is superb too...

"Once Upon A Time In The West" takes the separate music for each character to even greater heights - apparently Leone had Morricone write for each one in advance, forcing the actors to follow and absorb the subtle nuances of their own special melodies as preparation for performing.

But, but... then again... "Unforgiven" is such an absorbing, sort-of update - how Eastwood manages to question so many of the myths of his own Man With Three Names, yet still eat his cake and still have it with a magical display of sharp-shooting at the end.

Then again, better than "Outlaw Josey Wales", I think the very strange and disturbing "High Plains Drifter", from the early Seventies, is one of his most underrated classics.

But finally, I suppose, my vote must go to...
"Paint Your Wagon". :lolol:

"Grab a brush..."

Nah, Claudia Cardinale helps "Once Upon A Time..." just about shade it...

Toss up between Once upon a Time in the West and the Good the Bad and the Ugly.

I love most spaghetti westerns though :clap2:

Bloody hell. 30 replies and this is the first nod for High Noon.

Shame on you all.

That, or Once Upon a Time in the West, depending on what sort of mood I'm in.

Josey Wales is the best of the Clint efforts.

Yep and no mentions for Shane or The Searchers either; the latter would probably top most critics' polls of the best western.

I couldn't decide between those three.

Magnificent Seven although I enjoyed most of John Wayne's films.
