It's the Sports Book of The Year and it's a cracker.

The cricket was secondary....they were just a bunch of mates , journalists, etc who managed to arrange cricket matches around their social life, but in India, the local team thought they were far better than they were and had the India Under 19 team playing for them - the idea of the majority of the team was that they would not under any circumstance win a game and therefore if anyone was batting well, they would send someone in next to run that person out.

It was actually very poingnant(sp?) as the author did not actually finish the book, it was finished by his widow.

It is a very good read!

Another vote for Penguins Stopped Play - very entertaining book and you don't have to like cricket to enjoy it (and if your dad has a pathological hatred of British Airways he'll love it!).

As you Dad is likely to have been into football in the early 70's , The Damned United is very well written and is something he should enjoy.
