In Germany, every club has an anthem. I'm biased towards Freiburg's as I was a season ticket holder there but Cologne (Köln) was probably my favourite. I travelled up there twice, the second time really just to hear the fans singing. It's absolutely heart-stopping when you're in the stadium. Tune v similar to Loch Lomond.

The German ones I have heard all seem to be rock style 70s anthems sung by someone who looks like his other job might be appearing in German porn (so a friend told me anyway)!

Very similar is understating it, I'm sure that IS Loch Lomond.

I sort of know what you mean re some of them! But it's a highlight of a visit to anyBundesliga stadium, especially with the flags. It's why I'd love Albion to get drawn against a German side -- Freiburg or Leverkusen.

It prompted me to go back my ‘grounds I have visited’ spreadsheet and see that I have seen games at 9 stadia in Germany, hopefully get the chance to see a few more next summer! Leverkusen is one, before the upgrades, but not yet the new Freiburg stadium.

For me, part of being a signature song is that the fans in question are the only ones who sing it/a version of it.

On that basis, Blaydon Races is out for me.
I appreciate that Celtic do it too, but YNWA is my favourite other club anthem. I especially like it that then always sing it just before the final whistle, whether winning or losing.

Does anyone know when and why Sussex by the Sea was adopted by the Albion ?

Did a cursory google but couldn't find any history/info (there's plenty about the song - but not about its adoption by the Albion)

its been played as long as i've been going - the 70s. Was it pre - war ?

This does seem slightly unfair, as somebody else has noted above. It's not Newcastle's fault it's a banger.

Having said that, I've just found out that the actual tune that Blaydon Races is set to is an American tune called Brighton (as in Brighton Massachusetts), so clearly it should have been RIgHtfULlY OuRs THe WhOLe TiME.

Who else sings Blaydon Races? I thought it was just Newcastle. But yeah, I agree, there was a time a while back when loads of clubs seemed to adopt 'Simply the best' (Tina Turner). Borrrrr-ing!

On the 'unique' front I've always liked WHU's "I'm forever blowing bubbles". It's great when the crowd take over.

EDIT: Ah yes, re Blaydon Races we all sing a version of it! (I was thinking of entrance songs) :dunce:

EDIT2: No love for Norwich's 'On the ball, City'? :)
