For an older generation of crooners etc. there was an English bloke called Michael Holliday who had a voice close to Crosby (Bing- not Dave!) but I think he died young.

He did a song called "The Story of my Life" which I can always remember, it featured whistling as well. A lot of artists then could whistle as well as sing.

Probably, for my generation, even more famous for The Runaway Train, which seemed to be on Children's Favourites/Junior Choice every week. Sadly, he committed suicide at 38.

A great great talent no doubt. Matt Monro's Mona Lisa is truly brilliant. As to whether his voice is the best? I still think that Sinatra gets it. September Song, wow! Nat King Cole is a very very close second whose voice, honed by chain smoking, was none the less , truly wonderful. I love putting my I-Pod on shuffle and having music selections that change from Silicon Soul to Can to Matt Munro to Warpaint to Sinatra.
Eclectic Mix Diversity is best.

Not a singer, but has one of the best male voices I know.

As an alternative to the crooners - try Robert Wyatt singing Elvis Costellos 'Shipbuilding' or Soft Machines 'Moon in June' - both out there on You Tube....

Definitely Pavarotti. When on hols in France, the in laws bought me and the wife tickets to him him at the Stade Velodrome in Marseille. I knew nothing about Opera, but one hell of a voice. Had a chance to see him at the Hampshire Rose Bowl couple of years later but concert was cancelled due to I'll health, which was shame as shortly before he died..

No such thing as "ever", and many have already been listed, especially Scott Walker and Roy Orbison. Elvis, of course. As an outsider, how about Antony Hegarty?

Tony Hadley of Spandau Ballet was good especially in Through The Barricades.
Marty Pellow in Never been in Love.
The Bloke who sang You Raise Me Up, aussie I think but can't remember his name.
Perry Como in How I Love You So.
The Bloke in Living In A Box singing Fool In Your Heart.
George Michael In Kissing a Fool.
Mick Hucknell in Holding Back The Years.

Some good calls here, Matt had a good voice but i could not put him ahead of Cole or Sinatra of course we are talking of Popular singers and you cant judge them against Classical performers.
