Still no contest for this NSC evergreen - as it's still Larry Carlton's on Steely Dan's Kid Charlemagne. And it always will be.

Still find the short solo bit that comes in Zep's "Whole Lotta Love" after that long drone bit gives me goosebumps when it appears out of the blue.

Also spent hours at age 18 trying to learn "Sunshine of Your Love" solo from a vinyl single - drove my Mum mad, but I still love it .

And Mark Knoppfler's full live solo to "Sultans"

Sorry, but how come Hendrix hasn't been mentioned - "All along the Watchtower" probably my favourite.

I'm not about 'greatest' solos, but notable guitar recordings I like, are;
Since I've Been Loving You - Led Zep
I Ain't Got You - (Eric Clapton with) The Yardbirds, flip side of Good Morning Little Schoolgirl 45
Rock My Plimsoul - Jeff Beck (with Rod) flip side of 'Tallyman' 45
Crying to The Sky - BeBop Deluxe
Pride and Joy - Stevie Ray Vaughan
Sylvia - Focus
A Million Miles Away - Rory Gallagher
Johnny B Goode - Jimi Hendrix
Drivin' South - Jimi Hendrix (hear this once, and you never need to ask who was 'the best')

Worthy of mention for excellent guitarwork is Guy Whittington (with John Mayall), Leo Kottke, Harvey Mandel, BB King, and Buddy Guy
