ok, given that awesome spectacle is fast approaching, what would the NSC cognisenti's favourite ever Glasto set, witnessed in person, be then?

I only got there twice in 93 & 94 and for me, whilst the Orb were cool in 93 all the highlights were at the 94 one - would have to be a toss up betweixt main stage sets by The Black Crowes (touring the epic Sourthern Harmony... album) and RATM, and NME stage sets by The Fannies (with 100's of footballs and MOTD theme tune entry) and Eat on the MNE stage, the latter being perhaps more down to the quantity and qaulity of herbs inhaled before and during said set at the end of which Ange Dolittle, wearing a stunning Joseph type coat, got his kit off....
If I have to pick one, which was the point of the thread, I'll plump for RATM.

Just checked out the massive line up for 2010 and have to say The Glade Stage on Saturday looks pretty interteing, lots of On-U Sound and The Orb, nice....

Also see LCD Soundsystem are playing - as they are doing on the East Coast here but the fuckers ain't coming to Perth, boo hoo.

God, what a question. I think if I had to single out one performance I'd go with Jay-Z. I'm not into rap, knew little about him, but I was intrigued by the whole furore his attendance caused, the fact he would we well out of his comfort zone. I also partially use Glasto to listen/see stuff I would not normally buy a ticket for so it ticked a box in this respect.

The set was an amazing spectacle, the atmosphere incredible and Jay-Z himself was fun, playful and thoroughly entertaining. The Gallagher mocking intro was genuis (amongst other items it featured Ian Paisley going 'No No No'-does he say anything else?), the Wonderwall cover and the acapella rap about how the Queen had more bling than Jay-Z were both inspired. He also came across as quite humble and taken aback by the reception he got. I understand he adapted his set for Glasto....there were more rock samples etc. but it worked so well IMHO.

That said I could also bang on about 4 or 5 other sets and other shennanigans I've got up to. The New York Down-Lo and the Wrecking Ball at Trash City were great nights last year...esp if you're into techno and/or Italo-house.

I think Gorillaz will be great this year. LCD are big favourites of mine, and if Mr Murphy is true to his word this will be one of the last chances to see them (great new album by the way).

After a slow start the their gig at Brixton due to sound difficulties (they used Hot Chips gear I believe as theirs was stranded i the US due to the ash cloud and all that) LCD Soundsystem absolutely smashed it. The sound towards the end and the energy was bonkers.

1997 Shirehorses!

Picture the scene - it's 10.30am on a Friday morning. The rain is lashing down, and all the campers are knee deep in mud. Some of the hardy ones brave the elements, and make a brief pilgrimage to the second stage. For a while the rain stops, and an ery quietness overcomes the vale of Avalon that is Glastonbury. All quiet, that is, until the 'Flight of the Valkyres' starts up, and two men, dressed in red fleaces, shorts, and Manchester City shirts fly onto the stage.

"Rock and Roll!!" they cry, as Picknose the Producer and Paddy (evil pixy mastermind) also arrive and pick up their instruments. They leap into a blistering epic of 'The Seahorses' 'Love is the Law', followed by other classics such as 'Pants On - Plums Drop', and 'Gazebo - Lardy Boy', as well as a few new ones, such as 'Oasis - Roll With It' ("I want a roll with it, I want a chicken pie").

Is it any coincidence that after they had been on the stage it sank into the mud?

I think my highlights were Rage Against the Machine followed by the Levellers on the Pyramid stage on the Saturday night in 1994 and Fat Boy Slim in the Dance Tent last time I went to Glastonbury which was in 2000.

Stick to smaller festivals these days, only one planned this year is the Levellers Beautiful Days festival in Devon in August.
