I thought it was bizarre that Beckham was even in the list, so you can imagine my reaction when I saw the poll results

Best player FOR England? Ashley Cole. By an absolute MILE.

What this thread highlights is the lack of GIFTED players we've had since Gazza.
People talk about Jack Wilshere like he's some sort of world class player, but right now he's incredibly overrated. The likes of Steven Gerrard and Bryan Robson were already far better players at Wilshere's age, and I fear the lad will be blighted by injury.
I feel Beckham probably maximised his ability as did Lampard, but Rooney and Scholes have definitely under-achieved on the international stage. As for Ashley Cole, an individually good player without the presence of a Maldini or Roberto Carlos to make that telling difference.

Ashley Cole very rarely got/gets it wrong. And for so long. Not just for England but club too. Consistency allows players around you to play better so he's got to get massive credit for that too. Scholes obviously a genius at times but not enough of the time.

Your comments are bizarre. Beckham came second in the FIFA WORLD Footballer of the Year award TWICE, as voted for by coaches and captains of international teams (although I'm sure, as Mellotron from North Stand Chat, you know better...).
Incidentally, the only other player in the poll to feature was Shrearer (3rd in 96).

Lampard came second once as well.
Gary Lineker was 3rd in 91, which shows that even a tap in specialist can make it close if he scores enough tap ins. Coaches and captains of international teams would have included intelligent and thougtful people like Steve McClaren and John Terry in the past, neither ones opinion would sway me.
The years that Beckham came close were not World cup or European Cup years, so you have to wonder how much the worlds coaches and captains actually saw of him.

Scholes did not underachieve on the international stage, he just chose to retire early, there's a huge difference.

It's all opinions about players in different positions....what is' most gifted'....who you loved to see play....if you picked goalscorer there is only one in my book...and was amazing to watch....nobody has mentiioned him but I put that down to age.......Ladies and Gentleman...I present the one and only.....Jimmy Peter Greaves....goalscorer extrodinaire... League 366 goals in 528 games. England...amazing 44 goals in 57 games.

Chris Waddle had a very successful period at Marseille. He came second in a European Player of the Year awards. I also think it is stretching it a bit to say Hargreaves was an Englishman abroad. He was very much a Canadian when he played for Bayern.

yes, brief career....he's now 32 and retired a year ago...last played more than TWO games in a season in 07-08 (the same season that he last played for England)

Was'nt answering the question....giving my opinion of the great Jimmy as an England player....if you want me to answer the question...they all had their merits....how do you grade a goalscorer to a midfield dynamo or a defender....if pressed I would say it would be hard to beat Scholes...
Cut short yes, but not brief my opinion.
