I read Gordon Ramsey's autobiography a few years back and he was asked this very same question. He said Nigel Slater as well, but added the caveat that he's more a "cook" than a chef.

Also a very good food writer for the observer , been with them for yrs

Agree. On this tip I have followed Jay Raynor's restaurant reviews and writing in The Guardian/Obs for some time.

Not that it matters but I only found out Slater is gay a year ago. Need to recalibrate my Gaydar.

The bloke who does 'Man vs Food'. Easily the best cookery programme on telly, it's the only one where they cook stuff I actually want to eat. Worst is Nigel Slater, stuff like beetroot and goat's cheese are NOT proper foods.

Funnily enough was only wondering the same thing the other night . Wasn't sure wether he was or not , but as you say makes no diffrence to me

He certainly is an irritating pucker. I get urges to throw things at the tv when he's on it... That said his food is generally ok and fairly easy to make. His 'fantastic' fish pie is awesome...

Indeed - I can't stand the irritating cock, I can stand it even less that his recipe books are so good. Agreed, fantastic fish pie is well received in this household.

I rather like the Hairy Bikers at the moment - their pie book is great.

Jamie Oliver recipes always seem to be easy to follow and produce decent results. Another vote for Nigel Slater though.

Oliver is a twunt but I quite like his food. That said, it annoys me that he lobs it all on a plank of wood. Bit pretentious.
