Yes its back to those wonderful days of vinyl before the oil crisis and artists were able to develop without being dumped by the label.

Whether 1973 is the best year for albums, who knows but a selection releases in 1973 and which are still played today:

Billion Dollar Babies - Alice Cooper
Aladdin Sane - David Bowie
Brian Salad Surgery - ELP
Space Ritual Alive - Hawkwind
Houses of the Holy - Led Zeppelin
Band on the Run - Paul McCartney and Wings
Tubular Bells - Mike Oldfield
The Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd
Hello - Status Quo
Quadrophenia - The Who

Any others from 1973, or is there another year with 10 albums that are better than the list above?

It is just Space Ritual and no I don't think so.

It's got to be Dark Side Of The Moon, a work of genius.

I also think Houses Of The Holy is one of Led Zep's best albums too, so that comes in second.

Can't argue with that too much - don't know the John Martyn one but I'll swap that for Burning Spear's first album, New York Dolls first album and Lou Reed's Berlin

Desperado - Not loved by the critics at the time, but seen as one of their best these days.

Whether 1973 is the best year for albums, who knows

In answer to your original point, it's worth pointing out 1973 also saw the release of "Touch Me" by Gary Glitter and "Wombling Songs" by The Wombles.

1973's juxtaposition of total genius and total sh1te is quite remarkable.

1973 was also the year

Catch a Fire Bob Marley
Brothers and Sisters The Allman Brothers
Selling England by the Pound Genesis ( one of my all time favourite albums still)
For Everyman Jackson Browne - announcing the arrival of a lyrical maestro

It was a very good year
