I've been a bit slack this year only two albums purchased - Sleigh Bells & Perfume Genius. Considering the new Jack White album along with Paul Weller & Spiritualised anyone listened to these yet?

Definitely recommend Weller. Spiritualised also on my radar, but havent got around to purchasing it yet.

okay, I've bought a fair few albums this week and am liking a lot the DJ Format 'Statement of Intent'. It's proper breakbeat hip-hop and a superb party record. I've only listened to CD1 of Andrew Weatherall's 'Masterpiece' but it's seriously good. How does this bloke find all these great records? I spend hours on Juno and Beatport before I find even one of these tunes. He's got 36 of them here!

Wave Pictures 'Long Black Cars': If you like rock n roll guitars then please check this album out. It's just about their best yet and most like what they sound like live. The album flows beautifully and they write the kind of songs that force you to sit down with the sleevenotes/lyrics in front of you. Lymeswold's finest just got better.

Leonard Cohen 'Old Ideas': Breathtakingly good. I'm extremely biased as he's been a part of my life since I started really exploring music by myself as an 11 year old but this is as good as anything he's ever done. He's got the cute backing singers doing doo-wop, he growls and whispers through what is just a sublime album. I've told a few fellow Cohen fans that there are too many goodbye notes in this album for my liking. I suspect the old man won't be making any more after this. If that turns out to be the case then this is a very lovely way to bow out.

I'll be back soon for reports on some of the others. Apparently the Shackleton album is a mind-blower too. Not heard it but people who I trust and know more about music than me have said so.

The new Orbital album is brilliant, will have to check out the DJ Format album.

Bought the hip-hop mix tape Quakers by the guy from Portishead the other day. Lots of very nice beats.

Thanks for the heads-up on the Orbital album. Didn't even know they had released anything.

Is that Geoff Barrow from Portishead or the other bloke? Geoff Barrow is doing a lot of eclectic music of late. The Anika album a year or two back is a case in point. 60s girl music to a dub reggae beat as sung by Nico.

How did you get on with that Alina Orlova album? I know it was some time ago but forgot to ask how you got on.

Couldn't agree more. A really good album from a prolific band. They were great at the green door store the other day, including the realisation that one of their new tracks is called Seagulls.

Also, liking Sharon van Etten and First Aid Kit so far this year.

The Jack White Album is really good and up there with the best of the year.
Slightly embarrassed that I bought it on a wim at Sainsburys West Hove. Still- I picked up a few extra Nectar Points.

Geoff Barrow yeah, it's a very good hip hop album which are few and far between nowadays.

Your in for a treat with the Orbital album. They are doing a few gigs over the summer.

Yeah thanks for that- really enjoyed it. Quirky female singer songwriters are my thing.

Gui Boratto - Chromophobia.

It's not an album from this year but I only got it this year and I keep returning to it.

New Spiritualized album is a bit hit and miss. Some really good stuff on it but also a fair bit of filler. Still worth a listen though - and probably better than Songs in A & E.

The new Beach House album is sounding very good to me (though it's going to have to be pretty special to be as good as Teen Dream).

Brought the album by Django Django Sunday night. Sounds great on first listen reminded me a lot of the Beta Band with a hint of Hot Chip which is no bad thing.

Going to buy the Beach House Album today.

I agree with Killing Joke and VCMG, I'd also like to throw Ministry 'Relapse' in to the ring. It might not be the best album they've ever produced (would take something almighty to top 'Psalm 69'), but it's as heavy hell and I look forward to them making my ears bleed in July.

Just listened to the first 4 tracks of MMXII by Killing Joke and I have to say it's already sounding like it could eclipse last year's awesome Absolute Dissent. How do these old guys keep it up, quite stunning so far.

Jaz mentioned a couple of end of days shows they are playing in NZ in late December so fingers crosed they'll pop over to the West Coast of OZ and play here.....

I also just recived my Urban Turban vinyl from Cornershop, a compilation of last year's eclectic Singles Club release plus new stuff, another contender in my ears.

Another vote for Django Django here. Like the Beta Band they're from Edinburgh and someone said to me members may be related. The vocals certainly recall them and there are hints of their later incarnation The Aliens but the album still stands up on it's own with its use of rhythm and guitar.

Had Weatherall's Masterpiece on repeat too, another great shout.
