...in the UK. They had hit singles in several countries including the US in the 1970s, but they were released without the band's consent.
Can anyone actually provide any evidence this was a single? You may need to launch a steward's enquiry. Being sad I have trawled the net, and my old Guinness Book of British Hit Singles, and it certainly wasn't in the UK charts. He did record it on a 1972 album, but there's nothing on t'internet that makes me think it was released on 7". Of course, the internet doesn't know everything, so maybe the proposer has a copy?
Val did have a big hit in 1971 with a song just called Morning. But that's a completely different song to the old hymn that Cat Stevens made famous.
