Think he was injured for 3 or 4 games after West Ham? Not sure how long the injury went on or he wasn't being selected, but we could debate that all day I guess. Hughton preferred Bernardo, I'm not arguing that, but it wasn't set in stone, he seemed to prefer Bong away from home, had Bernardo been his defacto no.1 he'd have started more than 19 fixtures given injury probably only accounted for a handful of games. Had he been absolutely trusted by Hughton, I think his appearances would have been around the 30 mark.

Sorry to be pedantic but I looked it up (yes, sad case, but wanted to ensure I wasn’t going mad)

Got in team late Nov.
Had a run in the team for 9 games until West Ham where he was injured.

Missed 6 games.

Returned in Feb where he missed 4 games thereafter for the rest of the season, a couple soon after his injury, so arguably rotational to aid recovery.

To me I would suggest that once established he was a regular when fit.

I think Potter has made an error not giving him more opportunities, but as per my earlier post I don’t see him in training, and sometimes managers just don’t fancy certain players.

Just hope we continue to improve

Thing is with Bernardo, he is only 25, so while I personally haven't seen enough where I thought he had to be in the side, he has room to learn and improve, and may well adapt to the PL with more time. I therefore wouldn't be upset to see him remain in the squad and battle for that place. That said, conversely if GP thinks he can bring in a better option and allow Bernardo to move on good terms, then it's not like we're losing someone who has been a key component.

Was also surprised about Ali J but then I dont watch him seven days a week in training.

As for Bernardo, never convinced. If he was Scottish and named.. Richards instead of being Brazilian and named Bernardo, I think most would consider him quite poor.

As the first reply you received said, the club would have the full picture from training and analytics eg work rate.

It seemed a bit harsh to me, but I’m just watching games from afar.

I’m sure the club wouldn’t under use a £17m asset without good reasons.

mm training training for what? at the end of the day its what is done on the competitive matchday pitch that should count. So the manager asses him based on training and then elects to put in him the team, guy performs well and scores 2 goals which in a team with few goals should be not ignored but he is dropped. It remains a mystery, maybe he said something who knows. Really strange to me as at £17million a lot of wasted money. Also not sure what it says to players coming in.

Note I was responding to someones comment about him being given the opportunity to show how he can play. Looked to me he took it but still not given anymore game time.

Agree - certainly not based on last season

For me Bernado has never been anywhere near one of our better players. I think in his first season he defined himself for me against Arsenal at home, winning the ball back brilliantly and then passing it staright to an Arsenal player on the edge of the box who then forced Matty Ryan to make a good save. To me that sums up his game. A couple of years later and he still just gives the ball away continually. I don't he's progressed at all. It maybe he hasn't had a run in the side to develop, it may also be that he's just not very good.

No, what you do in training definitely matters. Once you allow players who train poorly into the starting lineup it can really only go downhill, it sets a very bad precedent. Feck knows what happened. Maybe he trained hard but after that successful week he slacked off, thought he "made it"? Only the team & staff knows. All I know is that CH & GP not both kept him in the freezer for no reason.

I’m with you Wardy. I think there’s more to this story that will come out one day, maybe in AJs or GPs autobiographies.

He had to wait so long to get a chance under Potter, and when he finally did scored 2 great goals, explosive impact one of which is the best goal I’ve seen us score in the Premier League.. and then dropped never featuring again except for a 5min cameo against City.

I trust the club and manager fully. So I wonder if something else happened. Ie, the Balloon night. He was a part of that, was he the instigator I wonder.

Anyhow we may still have him if we can’t sell.

fair comment but he did allow him in the starting lineup so assume training was not an issue...

maybe he is not a system player but sometimes you need that when the system is not working.

My lad really rates him, loves seeing him on the pitch. Me, I think he gets caught ball-watching way too much and is slow to react.

Opinions innit.

Seen many people say someone similar to Lamptey at LWB would be ideal. I noticed this comment in the Guardan predictions article from a Chelsea fan when asked if they had anyone similar to Lamptey for the other side.

Ian Maatsen. Dutch youth international, on the small side, flying pace, plays left sided fullback or wingback. Under contract till 2024 so no one’s having him for £4m Lamptey-style but after the Chilwell splurge he might be on for a loan move at least.

Loan to buy or just buy him outright? Ok, going to cost more than Lamptey but with the benefit of hindsight, i dont think anyone here would complain if Lampteys fee had been double what we paid. If he is as good as this fella says, could be exactly what we need.

Edit: There are highlights on youtube if anyone would like to upload (i'm using an xbox at the moment so cant even get the link) would seem he also plays in midfield when with Holland U21's. Looks very good to me.

Didn’t he come on in 2nd half last Sat?

Can’t recall him standing out

I'm not sure who many of their subs were tbh. His highlights on youtube were impressive, theres also a video there of his debut for Chelsea against Grimsby in the cup, looked ok, a lot of passing sideways to the centre back but nothing special, maybe being his debut though he was told to keep it simple, who knows?

At last someone’s spotted that fell asleep at the back post for City’s second, GP made a point of mentioning it after the game. Didn’t call out the player although It was what he meant.

I really rated him and thought he was a good outlet and ball player. But after reading comments and thinking back, I think because Bong wasn't overly great at PL level, Bernardo was probably an improvement on an already below average player

I think it is simply that GP prefers BDB in a four and Solly in a five because of their strengths tactically. So Bernardo is at best second choice, and possibly third.

If that's the case, and I was Bernardo, I'd be pushing for a move as he's in his prime and needs to be playing regularly, and I suspect that is what's happening

You can see the same with the comments on here. He catches the guy because he runs a lot, is mobile, quite quick and does get down the line but he is a bit of a headless chicken at times.

You are right though - he does ball watch, is slow to react, his positioning is poor and so is his distribution. That is why Potter will never regularly play him, he demands more positional inteligence and ability to keep the ball from his players. Burn and March depending on back 3/4 etc are definitely the better and safer options at the moment but hopefully we will sign a specialist.

In hindsight another really poor buy. £9m was it? Him, Ali J and Locadia for £40m. We'd be lucky to get £15m for the lot now.
