Why was it?

Because, as we know, its at an arms-length from traditional democracy, so it doesn't have to do knee-jerk policies to get re-elected; and doesn't have to think in just a short-term view on the big issues like climate change. I mean, thats the point of a benevolent dicatorship, it doesn't have to fight to be elected so doesn't have to pander to the masses and to the here and now.

One example related to climate change is palm oil, the EU is the first big market to insist on sustainable palm oil and prevent the import of unsustainable palm oil. This is a major cause of deforestation in SE Asia in particular, and is heavily implicated in the massive peatland fires that occur annually and release globally significant levels of CO2 to the atmosphere. The largest recorded annual rises in both atmospheric CO2 levels and global temperatures corresponded to the two worst peatland fire seasons on record, 1998 and 2015.

Indications are that the UK post-Brexit will drop requirements on importing non-sustainable palm oil in order to complete a new trade deal with Malaysia.

Seriously, lower middle class English people eating leaves won't solve a problem caused by India, China and Russia burning anything they find to get richer. And.....who can blame them?

And who can stop them? The Donald?

Following the recent IPCC climate change report, is it now time to get real, accept people aren't going to change without the force of law and start a move towards benevolent dictatorships to save us all?

Manifesto pledges for starters:

AIR TRAVEL - All citizens to be issued with one air travel voucher per year, transferable. Those wishing to have more foreign holidays will have to buy vouchers from those willing to sell. This should lead to a reduction in air travel whilst those unable to afford foreign holidays, or not wanting to use their voucher, can get some income from selling their vouchers.

COMMUTING - Those living within 3 miles of their place of work/study aren't allowed to drive there without a medical certificate proving they can't walk/cycle or access public transport for the journey.

PLASTIC STRAW AND COTTON BUD BAN - No proposal to ban them....we're just going to ban them as from NOW.

PRIVATE CARS - Maximum two cars per household, no exceptions. Tax breaks for one car or no car households.

Any more pledges anyone?

How about Migration from Warmer climates to colder? This will raise the need for travel, winter fuel etc etc.. take as long as you want.

Agreed. But it's a bit rich pointing the finger elsewhere when current lifestyles in the so called 'developed world' are ultimately un sunstainable and our democratically elected leaders aren't doing enough to force us to change as they all want our votes.

I've read one report that Americans, Americans of all people!, and especially their young, are becoming increasingly sympathetic towards the idea of benevolent dictators.

I am against any dictator. The right to elect someone else is the best of our rights. Beware messiahs

As mentioned earlier nothing will be done about the future until our political system becomes less short termist.

Kalmatian Gull's post was an explanation of one of the major positives of the EU.

And what does that right achieve exactly? A load of promises and bribes that pander to enough people to buy the leader/party a term of office. Very few people will vote against their immediate best financial interests, and so the circus goes on.

The opportunity for change.

Without that we have dictatorship. Facism. **** that. I will fight that. Always.

I have no time for the likes of you who think they know best, 'forever'. Luckily you don't have the brains to make it happen. Not ruthless enough.

Is the commuting one based on office dwellers? There are others many who need to carry equipment or tools. Not been thought through really. Personally I’d shut all offices

A benevolent dictator? Yes please! - as long as he/she agrees with me about everything.

Otherwise, stuff it!

For the benefit of Mr. Kite
There will be a show tonight on trampoline

The Hendersons will all be there
Late of Pablo Fanques Fair, what a scene!

Over men and horses hoops and garters
Lastly through a hogshead of real fire!
In this way Mr. Kite will challenge the world!

Your candour does you credit.

The problem with this approach to governance however is that it takes a great big shit on traditional democracy.

Once non elected Herberts from another country interfere with the workings of a democratically elected government you have problems. Not least in countries that not so long ago lived under authoritarian regimes.

ok, but just to be sure you actually believe in benevolent dictatorship, let's appoint me. I reckon I may disagree with you on lots of important issues so my benevolence would be different to yours. That wouldn't matter though because this idea isn't about you getting your own way, is it ? :)

the EU was responsible for this in the first place by mandating use of biofuels. so well done them for reversing their own idiotic policy, and prime example why shouldnt let politicans dictate such specific policy.

Palm oil is in half the packaged products in a UK supermarket; from shampoo to ice cream to bread. How's the EU responsible for that? In Italy most packaged supermarket products have a big 'No palm oil' badge on the front.

some time in mid 00's EU directive said we must use biofuels. they thought it would come from recycled oil (ie chip fat, residue from food procssing) or locally grown oils. the cheapest biofuel was sourced, leading to over a third of palm oil consumption burnt as fuel.
