And some struggle counting years :lolol:

What? We'd been in the premier league for two years when we signed webster. We knew we were going to be in the premier league for a third year when we signed webster. We didn't know we'd make it four until a few weeks ago.

Correct.

And this is the crux of the matter that seemingly all Leeds fans (and some of our fans don’t get).

It is not our job to give fair market value.

“But but he’s played just one season in the Championship you idiot, how can he be worth £40m lolz?”

I repeat, it is NOT our job to give fair and reasonable market value. He is not for sale. Therefore any interested party would need to make an over the odds offer.

I am genuinely astonished so many can’t grasp this.

“But wait, you would turn down £30m now?? We don’t even need him lol”

Whatever you think about him as a player. He is an asset under contract to us. To sell now, on the eve of his Premier League debut season, where he has a good chance of an England call up would be utter lunacy. His price can literally double in a years time.

And then that’s just the business side.

When was the last time we had big clubs sniffing around one of our young players? Being mentioned by the England manager so early on?

And there are Albion fans quite happy to accept the first bids. Astonishing.

Agree with every bit of this and in addition I can virtually smell the desperation wafting over the Pennines as I sit in my garden here in Manchester. They are obsessed with capturing White. Why?
The fans belief in success will evaporate if they don’t get him or is it to do with a certain bucket Loving Argentinian and his demands prior to signing that new contract?

sure, if we want him to take part in the first team this season. otherwise, he is a valuable asset and need to secure the best return. if he is inclinded to leave, go to Leeds etc, better to let him move on to Liverpool or elsewhere. the business side would know the market rate for a promising but untested player.

...I don’t understand. You’re suggesting it would be a good decision to sell him for £20m?

And of course he’s going to be involved in the squad. Why wouldn’t he be?

Wasnt it £10m a few weeks back?
Now were talking £22-27m

Bets for this time next week. Do you think we'll be talking £30m?

That's what i predicted. Think Bloom would accept that

And some of us read posts too quickly and look stupid trying to make a cheap joke. Sorry about that. I shall sit on the naughty step.

I daresay that if I popped to my retired neighbours house and offered her 'market value', she wouldn't accept. Despite the fact she doesn't need a four bedroom place any longer her house is not on the market, perhaps she wants to keep it. One would guess that I'd have to pay well over the odds if I want to convince her to move out of her house.

At some point, pretty much everything is for sale, and there exists a number that will convince Brighton to sell to Leeds. I very much doubt the number they can afford is close enough to the number that would twist our arm.

We need a holding midfielder far more than we need another CB. We should just tell them that our price for Ben White, is Kalvin Phillips (plus £10m, for the lolz).

Let's see how they like that.

Exactly!

There’s always a magic number. But talk of “that’s not a fair price he’s only played in the Championship” etc misses the mark entirely.

When you don’t want to sell, market value is irrelevant. It will have to be over the odds.

I’ve said to several Leeds fans that they should be more worried Bielsa hasn’t committed to a new contract, without exception they all say he’ll sign, I point out, it’s been 11 days now since his contract lapsed, and he does have form for the unexpected, not worried they reply, I’ve then asked why hasn’t he signed yet then, not one has a convincing answer.

Leeds fan here.

With all due respect you should your club should not be holding Ben White to Ransom. Lets be honest you didn't want to know him before he was loaned out to Leeds, your coaches clearly didn't see much potential in him and he has flourished under Bielsa. I'm not implying that you should only sell him to Leeds but he clearly doesn't have any desire to play for Brighton. Liverpool or Chelsea etc could get him but is he guaranteed playing time with them? He is guaranteed with Leeds and he is Bielsa's top target and it looks like Leeds will up their offer, but for a team that did not play him a year ago he is now the best thing since slice bread to you.

If I was a betting man I would say that he will not go forward under Potter (unless you think Potter is a better coach than Bielsa) which would be laughed at by everyone and I think we will more than likely end up with him. Well over £20m will be a fantastic bit of cash for him. The only thing that will also break it for you is if White puts in a transfer request which im guessing will happen.

Im expecting you to slag me off with replies and telling me to F-off etc because I don't think many will have any constructive repliesm

It would be VERY funny if The Albion announce a new contract for White and then Bielsa walks because of it

Can't blame him for holding out, doubt he wants a relegation on his CV. He isn't known for sticking around too long anyway, so if he stays he'll likely be gone by Xmas.
He's just a poor man's Poyet anyway!

The thing that gets me with all this is why no The Leeds United fans seem to have even the slightest grasp of supply and demand concepts.

Moreover, they seem very quick to give us their estimations of what White is worth, suggesting that we should willingly be accepting £20m and telling us we're having a laugh valuing him higher. Nobody can seem to understand that Leeds' valuation of him is utterly irrelevant here. If the Albion don't want to sell White then we can value him at £200m if we want to. If we were having a fire sale and urgently needed to raise funds, you can bet your arse Leeds would be coming in closer to £10m, hoping to take advantage of our desperation.

As it is, the situation is reversed: we have no particular need to sell, therefore he's worth whatever we say he is. If we want to take advantage of Leeds' desperation to have him, that's entirely our prerogative. If they want to spank most of their annual transfer budget paying a ludicrous price for one player, then so be it. I've said it before: we can't lose here.
