Joins the Potter club of playing out of position. Leeds played him in emergency for couple of games in midfield Potter played him there out of choice. Also played here as full back. Trouble with 3 CBs unless you are the central one spend time out wide. In Whites case a lot of time because of Lamptys excursions upfront

Considering the step up he’s had to make to the premier league, in a new team too, he’s acquitted himself very well.

I don’t expect him to be a world beater or do magic tricks or cartwheels (although that would be interesting). He’s very solid and he’s clearly got a massive future in the game.

I can see why he is used in midfield from time to time as he has the ability to not only protect the back line, but he is quickly aware of what is on up front and can pick a pass at will. More than a utility player but good in both positions. I do agree though, at his age he should be played in one position to give him a fair crack at fulfilling his potential.
I don’t think Leeds have necessarily missed him though - they seem to be one of those teams that play to a system that could be filled with well oiled robots.

Good player, going to improve a lot as well. Prefer him to stay as central defender though and not a fan of Potter sometimes moving him into midfield, but at the same time the experience he gets from playing in a different position will be very useful - but as I said, very much prefer him to play in the back line.

Probably the youngest regularly starting CB in the league right now? Very bright future.

Wesley Fofana is 20 and has played the last 10 (league) games for Leicester.

I agree with the rest though - he was never going to be able to repeat what he did last season, given the huge step up in quality of opposition. He is doing very well and still settling in at this level - not helped by the form & confidence of the rest of the team.

You could easily argue that Leeds HAVE missed him - they've conceded 30 goals in 14 matches...more than any other team in the EPL.

i have watched your lot on tv three times this season. admittedly he is not played in his preferred position for much of that and obviously a huge step up in quality/opposition but he looks like a shadow of the player who played for us last year, you play a completely different game to us and i guess a lot is down to that. i didn't buy into all the hype, he did ok for us but what i see this season so far i am happier with koch / llorente - good luck to him. hope he does come good for you all.

First season in the premier league,

He needs to be cut some slack.

There is no slack in the PL, or you're down and out. Maybe thats the problem, Potter needs to see a tailor, smarten up a bit.

FWIW I think BW has acquitted himself well. If he's worth £40m sell him quick! we're not short of defenders.

Leeds? Did he play for Leeds last year then. Not every minute of every game surely?

Seems to be played because of the hype and hasn't looked that comfortable in midfield or part of a 3. The Leeds system obviously suited him. Seems Potter picks Dunk and Webster and thinks hmm what to do with Ben White.... If we want to sell to buy then I'd prefer him sold over Lamptey and Biss. I know every one says oh Bloom never sells when he doesn't want to but cash has been affected by covid. We don't need BW as much as the others and in particular as much as a bloody striker.
That's not to say he hasn't made some brilliant interceptions and tackles and looked impressive at times (also been caught out of position and weak in the air) and would not sell unless we need to. But a swap for Origi (plus cash?) or similar then yes please.

Very good as a centre back. Not so as a midfielder.

Could easily play for England at the back in the future if we don't keep trying to shove his square pegness in a round hole.

Doing OK.

Last season he was playing for a winning attacking team in a lower division. This season he is playing for a losing team in a higher division and coming under more pressure from better players.

I wonder how he would cope as a CB in a back four.

I do not think we need to be fearful of losing him (unless we go down). Have there been many MoM performances ? Is he good enough in the air ?

A perfect summary. Amid all the furore before he confirmed he was staying some of the obvious points you've made were overlooked. Looking a world beater in the Championship is world away from looking like that in the premier league

Interesting range of views. I think in the main he's been excellent playing as the right of a three doing that alongside Lamptey is not going to be easy. For all Lamptey's quality he makes mistakes positionally and is often found wrong side of the ball when teams counter on us. He's learning the game too. The amount of times he has either had successive overloads on his side such as Villa for example or been dragged out to confront a wide player. He is playing without a lot of protection at times and doing a great job in the main for his 1st season.
As said elsewhere look at Webster last season as a comparison its a big step up in class, he will improve and go on to have a big career I feel. if he were 6ft 2 he'd be in even greater demand than he already is, but he will physically develop and as he learns the game he will mitigate his lack of height as he develops his style. I'd want north of £40m before I'd sell as he is only getting better next season...

It's a pity that Veltman has not had more game time. I know Ben will mature into a good centre back but for me Veltman is the better of the two at the moment. I would go as far as saying that Veltman is the equal of any of our centre backs at the moment

Agreed. I think Potter maybe playing White in midfield at times simply to accommodate him in the team as he's potentially 4th choice CB, but too good (or promising) a player to leave out and needs to play to continue this development. Playing in central midfield will help his development even if he's not as good there so probably part of the longer term plan (currently White clearly has much higher long-term value than Veltman, even if Veltman is a better defender)

....problem is of course this is subsequently keeping Alzate on the bench and stalling his development. Who'd be a manager eh ?
