I'm guessing that amongst all the Hendo, blah, blah, FDM, blah, blah threads, somebody has pointed this out, but I can't find it, so......

In the Carlisle program, there is the second part of a long piece about Ben Roberts. It finishes by stating that he is currently back training at the Albion, trying to prove his fitness and get back into the game. He never took the insurance money when he finished so is a free agent to sign for anyone.

Not suggesting for a second that this is relevant to the current Hendo / FDM borefest, but I always rated Roberts.

Yeah, I agree with you HK. Ben Roberts was, like FDM, pretty much dependable. Of all the goalkeepers I've witnessed play for us, especially in the last 5 years, he probably has to rank up there as one of the better keepers we've had. I didnt know he was training with the Albion, which is interesting. I'd say he could do a job. :)

I think he is looking for a part time club.

His back isn't up to the professional game anymore.

I read that somewhere a couple of weeks ago, might well have been in the Argus.

I don't have the article here, so this isn't word for word, but Ben says 'I'm only training two days a week right now, which is nothing like training and playing every day, so it's a case of waiting to see how it holds up, but I'm hoping to get fit and get back'....etc.

As a pretty neutral observer I really do seem to remember that there were very similar conversations about Roberts and Kuipers as there are now about Henderson and Kuipers.

There were but they weren't quite so polarised.

As jonny.rainbow says, Ben wouldn't be fit enough to play at this level again.

A shame, 'cos I thought he was a really good goalie, not merely technically, but in terms of his attitude and professionalism.

I wish him all the very best for the future, whoever he plays for eventually.

That save at Bradford when we nicked a 1-0 win courtesy of Bob's effort not crossing the line was one of the best I've ever seen from an Albion keeper. Still can't believe he made it.

Probably the best keeper we've had in the last 10-15 years (since Beeney/Keeley).

I would agree with that. The beauty of that was the upper tier of the away end was so close to the goal we were practically looking down over his head as he did it. He was still on loan at that point.
