In the past certain threads started by me may have lead some NSC readers to believe that I thought that Ben Roberts is a clown

Headlines such as

'Coco-a-Go-Go'

'Roberts signs for Billy Smarts Circus'

'Ben deputises for Krusty in tonights episode of the Simpsons'

'Custard pie horror at The Withdean'

and 'Albion Keeper in revolving bow-tie accident'

may have given this wrong impression.

I would now like to admit that Ben Roberts is the greatest English Keeper since Gordon Banks, his saves today would put Lev Yashin to shame, and that his nickname should be 'The Cat'.

I still wonder though why he arrives on the pitch wearing size 24 shoes on the back of a mini fire engine with half a dozen dwarves

Mmmmm......you picked up the humble pie, had a bite, but discovered you didn't quite like the taste and put it down again.

There's a whole word out there to take the piss out of, so let's do that rather than make up silly nicknames that if they catch on in the stands, could undermine the confidence of our own players.

We can all hear "let's have a winner" Cullip and that sweary mary who played for Wycombe, can Ben hear the "Coco" wits?

If he can I am sure that he that he knows that it has nothing to do with his shot saving capabilities and everything to do with him not being able to run rings around oncoming forwards with the ball at his feet. In that respect I think that it is helpful to him.
I play football every Monday night - I know what I am good at and I know what I get abuse from my so called mates for attempting when I don't have a snowball's chance in hell of being successful. It's called a learning process and if the tags applied to Ben help that learning process then we are making a positive contribution.

Incidentally I thought that two of his saves today were as good as the one away at Bradford last season.

Err, what word were you thinking of?

Call me controversial, but "Acrocephalic" is surely well overdue to have the piss taken out of it.

Someone with a pointy head, in case you're wondering.

The last keeper who was referred to as 'A clown' was Bruce Grobbelaar, and if Roberts is half as successful as Brucey I will be delighted.

I don't think I really need to say anything El Pres.

Oh sod it! Told ya so!

Roberts IS a good keeper, he's just made some mistakes, like Kuipers has done.

BTW, did anyone here Oldham's Aussie goalie telling his team to F**king get the ball out.

Roberts made two great saves but still played like a clown.

I have never said he is a bad keeper, but dribbling past centre forwards wearing size 24 shoes is not recommended.

I was at Bradford last season and the save he made was the best by an Albion keeper in the 30 years I have been watching them
