Not so sure Somerset.. I dont recall anybody I served with in the RN who had joined for anything other than learning a trade and travel.
You may find some of those units at the sharp end have a bit of 'Queen and Country' about them. Sunbathing jacks, and RE pongoes rarely do much other than please themselves, its tradition. ( notice I never even lowered myself by mentioning the air boys)

Dont think too many jacks were sunbathing in the South Atlantic :)

The trouble is his type love to get into people when they express views him and his kind don't like. If someone said something inflamatory about Gays him and his ilk would be up in arms calling for someones resignation if the words came from a rival politicians mouth.

So people are calling for his resignation for expressing a view that is un-PC, but get annoyed when 'his type' do the same? Personally, I think all sides should calm down a tad.

Please explain to me exactly how your "freedom" had been impacted positively by the operation in Afghanistan.
I feel free to walk into town without a terrorist bomb going off.

Right because those who blew up the trains and buses in London and murdered the soldier in broad daylight were Afghan...

One could also argue that our intervention in places such as Afghanistan and Iraq has made a terrorist bomb on British soil more likely, not less.

You're trying to wind me up with these government sponsored ideas, aren't you?

If you seriously believe the invasion of Afghanistan in 2001 did nothing to halt the threat of terrorism you are nuts

do you support suspended councillor Duncan on this issue?

I'm pretty sure they blew up some trains and buses in London AFTER the invasion of Afghanistan

The threat of terrorism has been halted? Hurrah!!

well it was in 2001 Dave with the invasion of Afghan. The use of the word halt in its many definitions is key.
in the context you replied to (a temporary stop in a process)

temporary Dave!

It wasnt halted in any sense...terrorist attacks have continued...attempted shoe-bomb attack on an American flight, was less than a month after the invasion.
Invading Afghanistan, and Iraq, to help fight Americas wars have increased the chances of terrorist attacks in the west, and the UK , it certainly hasnt made them less likely.

Before we skipped hand-in-hand with the USA to invade Iraq, how many incidents of islamic terrorism had Britain suffered?

1972 - Black September
1980 - Iranian Embassy
1982 - Abu Nidal
1988 - Lockerbie
1994 - 2 x car bombs in London, both Islamic attacks.

Black September was nothing to do with Islam....but the Palestinians fight against Israel....and in Germany.
Iranian Embassy, was not Islamic terrorists. The Iranian Embassy was the Islamic Republic of Irans embassy. The attack was by counter revolutionaries.
Abu Nidal, again nothing to do with Islam, but assasinating the Israeli Ambassador in the Palestinians fight against Israel.
Lockerbie, nothing to do with Islam. An attack against an American flight, allegedly by Libya, that was planned to explode over the Atlantic. Not Britain. Hardly an attack on the UK
2 x car bombs outside the Israeli Embassy, in the fight between the Palestinians and Israel.

Fool..... all were by Islamic terrorists.... All in Britain...... if you want to split hairs then feel free, but you are appearing to look desperate in your floundering.

Note: please look up Black September and UK attack, stop with your ignorance will you.

FYI... bombs going off in the UK are attacks on the UK.... however you try to dilute and excuse it.

Nobody is splitting hairs. Im certainly not desperate. If youre going to consider Israeli-Palestinian issues the same as direct attacks against
Britain by jihahist groups, with the sole purpose of hurting the UK, and its population, then im afraid I have to consider you a complete nitwit.

Black September in the UK...are you referring to the letter bomb attack on the Israeli ambassador? Again, an issue between Palestinians and Israel
over the land...and **** all to do with Islam....as you know.
Hopefully, you will respond, and I can have another good giggle.

Giggle away DIP, it sums up your contributions, your question, precisely, said "how many incidents of Islamic terrorism has Britain suffered".... my answers went some way to answering your question. As you always do on here, as soon as someone gives you a serious challenge to your assertions, you always add or subtract caveats and qualifiers to convince the readers that you are right no matter what.....I answered your question, take it on the chin for once......

Note: to help you, look up pan arabism, its premise to advance the cause of a joined up Arab nation based on culture and RELIGION.... ( Islam).... then cross reference the groups referred to in the attacks in the UK with that ideology,.....

To be fair mate hes probably right, but that only goes to reinforce my point that the vast majority of muslims will feel more loyalty to their co- religionists than they ever will to their country, though id like to hear his explanation for the WTC bomb , which was well before iraq or afghanistan , I wont hold my breath though , he's the clown who busily told us about the sunni majority in iraq :lolol:
