Beer on the terraces

Is it true that if you go to watch Lewes you're allowed to buy beer and drink it on the terrace during a game?

I seem to remember several posts on here saying you could do that, but I've just been having a discussion with someone who maintains it's illegal to drink beer on the terraces at football grounds in England.

I heard an interesting story the other week about Lewes, which I cannot of course confirm or deny but the source seemed fairly genuine and sure of the facts. Apparently the bloke who owns the team is a football agent, he brings in players who are on his books to play for them, nothing wrong with this of course as the club seems to be going from strength to strength and his players are getting work. However, as their agent he gets a cut of their wages, I assume the players are happy with this as they know about the arrangement before they put pen to paper. I am not sure that this is entirely ethical as surely there is some sort of conflict in interests here, other than said agent using the club as a showcase for the players on his books. Apparently Lewes go through an amazing number of players in a season, people stay for a few games then move elsewhere, doesn't seem to be doing them any harm. It looks like a two horse race between them and Borough for the title, three Sussex teams in the BSP must be a real possibility.

Steve King USED to be an agent he is not anymore as he is not allowed to do that and be a manager of a club at the same time. Yes we did go through a lot of players last year but this was down to injuries to the regular players and some of the player brought in were no good or went on to better things. This season the team has gelled well as and injuries are less hence our league position at the moment.

Thanks for clearing that up SoL, it should be pointed out that my source was in fact a Borough fan...I now realise that there may have been an element of sour grapes in his tale, nothing wrong with using your "former" links to bring in players as most managers do precisely that one way or another.

Heady days for Sussex football, have things ever looked so good, even Horsham have had a good start in the Ryman Premier...pity Bognor look buggered!

You can buy a nice pint of Harveys, walk around the ground with your beer, view the castle while watching football, I have never seen anyone challenged, they also sell nice pies. You can mix with away fans and watch a good standard of football.

Steve King is not very liked around the non league world so it comes as no surprise this has raised its head again. It maybe sour grapes from your Borough friend but at the moment Eastbourne and Lewes are faving the flag for Sussex football very nicely in the Blue Square South and long may it continue (as long as we beat them twice over Christmas / New Year). Bognor are doomed on what I have seen of them this year (5nil win for Lewes at there place) which is a shame as they play good football but cannot get the results.

It's an oft-told tale of when NSC sponsored a Lewes match (Lewes v Redbridge - December 2005). Great match, Lewes second in the table at the time, Redbridge bottom.

We were drinking Harveys all morning, get to the Dripping Pan, more Harveys in the supporters' bar (get picture taken with Albert Jarrett), more Harveys on the terraces. Go for a piss just on kick-off, get out of the loo and Redbridge are 1-0 up (34 seconds). Come 30 minutes and Redbridge are 4-0 up and the Lewes fans are singing for the Brighton fans to f*** off for being a jinx.

Lewes get a penalty - miss it, but still manage to score before half-time. 4-1 to Redbridge at the break. 20 minutes into the second half, after intense pressure, more Harveys on the terrace, and more goals, Lewes go 5-4 up. The last 20 minutes are a bore, frankly.

After eleventy pints of Harveys, I forget one of the responsibilities of the match sponsor - choosing the Man of the Match. Thankfully, one of my mates with me hadn't been drinking so he chose for me. Ooops.

Marvellous day, marvellous scenes. And for that experience alone, I will have a soft spot for Lewes FC.

And we do it all again at next year's REMF game. :drink:

One thing I did hear is that you can't drink beer on the terraces during an FA Cup match - FA rules and all that.

Must have iron guts. :D:D

No the reverse guts that hold in nothing! But I am veggie and its the spinach and feta pies I recommend, even if they are heated up in a microwave.

Talking of bad guts though, the loo at the back of the main stand above the club house, has urinals that are by a window, so you can pee out excess beer while turning your head 90 degrees and watching the game. A great plus for a ground that lets you drink anywhere during league games (bloody fa cup spoilsports).

Lewes is a great place to go to watch a match. The ground has character but it also has some decent facilities now. Nice views of the Downs and the Castle. I like standing under cover behind a goal watching a game - plus you get to stand with a beer! And, if you get tired, you can wander round to the seats. All for £10.

...which is why watching non-league football is often more pleasurable than that at a higher level...looking at the attendances on the lower levels of the football pyramid it seems to be catching on.

Lewes at home to Sutton in the FA Cup 2pm this SUNDAY.

Get along and support the Rooks (but unfortunately no beer on the Terraces - see above).

Good luck to them, hopefully they will draw someone in this part of the World in the next round so I can get to see them play. Last season I went to watch Borough play at Bishops Cleeve (just outside Chelts), the game that we rigged the player of the round...allegedly!
