That was at Millwall, pretty sure the same game John Robinson got kicked by a Millwall fan, i think the highlights are on that seagulls tv website.

The Chivers/ Digweed incedent happened at Milwall in the 91-92 season, the year we went down. (think it was early in the season possibly september) Not West Brom as others have thought.

The loss of the comedy outfield-player-in-goal is one of the most disappointing modern developments in the game.
Who could forget the hilarity of watching some clueless midfielder stuck in between the sticks, shirt a couple of sizes too big, diving around enthusiastically but unsuccessfully in pursuit of the speeding ball? The subsequent peppering of the goal with shots from all angles, the frantic defensive clearances aimed at preventing the ball going anywhere near the box.
It's such a rare occurrence now thanks to the seven substitute policy. You only seem to get it if a keeper gets sent off after all the substitutions have been made: Robbie Savage for Derby is one of the last ones I can remember, last season.
I have dismal memories of a crappy League Cup tie in the late 80s or early 90s at the Goldstone where Gillingham had their keeper sent off (for some utterly bizarre reason, I still recall his name- Phil Kite) for a professional foul on Paul Wood. That was in the first half, and they then stuck a 5'10" midfielder in goal. We spent the remainder of the game failing miserably to beat him, and subsequently lost the game to a total sucker punch. That was in the days when Gillingham were a couple of divisions below us and perennial minnows.

The Digweed rearranging-of-the-genitals was, without a shadow of a doubt, at home to West Brom.
Perhaps you're thinking of another game where Perry got injured in the warm up, Chivers went in goal for a bit, until John Keeley could be summoned from wherever he happened to be that afternoon (possibly in the pub, as I do remember him telling a tale of turning up for a game pissed).
Edit: maybe it was Beeney not Keeley, but there is definitely one doing the rounds about him playing for the Albion after a few beers).

darlington definitely had their keeper sent off at gillingham, and it was very early on. the game still finished 0-0!

He never actually played did he? He just allowed the manager to name 5 outfield subs by offering his services in goal.
You could be right, but i seem to remember watching him let in a few goals on the tv highlights. Need someone on here to confirm.

he never played in goal - he was just first back up when dean wilkins decided he couldnt work with just four outfield substitutes so went the whole hog and didn't bother with a 'keeper on the bench
