Hmmm. Seeing as I was one of the best climbers in the country when I was 17 and have voluntarily worked as an accountant for my local primary school and done months of grunt work for Barnardo's you might want to rethink that post.

Tougher than anything I've done? Ha ha ha!!!! Like Shane Duffy, Google me.

I didn't say anything about his TA SAS thing btw.

I said he is a serial liar who has made a fortune from bullshit.

Of course he will come across as charismatic when he needs to. That's The whole thing that underpins the scam. You clearly fell for it.
I would love to google you, but I don't know who you are. Which makes it difficult.

Off the back of this thread I watched it again with my wife and son (who'd not seen it before) this evening. What a great piece of film making.

It still scares the shit out of me despite knowing that Alex is alive and well. Oh and that he and his girlfriend are now married.

She's a brave woman because he's not going to stop.......

I've lost quite a few friends to climbing accidents but I do also get the reasoning behind what seem like ridiculously, stupidly dangerous actions. Sometimes you just get that thing in your head and you have to go for it.

Friends of mine who have climbed with Alex say that they've never seen anyone with such control. He came over here a few years ago and basically walked up a lot of the most dangerous routes on gritstone.

But still. One foot slip. One hold cracking. A grain of sand on a smear. You're dead.

Crazy shit.

LL, I’m curious. Are you fearless (or fearless of heights?) is that cos you are 100% confident with your ability or is there something ‘missing’ or ‘broken’ in your brain that turns off usual thoughts.

I ask as you say you have lost friends to climbing etc but you still do it.

I climbed a tiny bit when I was 18-20, usual top roping at High rocks or free climbing to 20ft etc. Thought I was brave but now I am 48 I am petrified of heights, even a ladder shits me up.

It’s getting worse as I get older so soon I won’t be able to jump out of bed!

Are you good with speed? Etc

I appreciate phobias are often irrational, my wife hats the tiniest of spiders, but a fear of heights is your brain saying you are in danger - how do you suppress that??

Is this thread heading for the 'bear' pit?

Serial liar? That is a bit far. If you’re going to keep saying that can you come up with some of the things he’s lied about?

He’s never claimed to be an expert climber as far as I’m aware?

He’s admitted that some of his programmes are dramatised which is normal.

I think you have a bee in your bonnet. If he was claiming to be the very best solo climber out there then I’d understand your point to a degree but he’s simply a man who got various experience in adventure beyond the normal man that has marketed himself superbly and become very successful.

He’s done more than most in terms of adventure and positivity.
I refer you to my second post on this thread. It's really not very complicated if you can read.

Yeah I'm not sure why people are finding that bit difficult either. My ****ing Twitter account is on every post I've made. [emoji23]
OK, so I found you on Twitter. Which didn't help much.

Accountants with attitude?

I always found climbing a bit of a bore personally, but then I don't like heights.

Mate I'm rubbish nowadays. Still do a bit but not to any decent standard, just for fun with my son.

Interesting that you climbed at High Rocks at that time. At the same time I repeated all the big routes there and did the 1st ascent of The Second Generation. We probably met as I was there all the time when I was 15/16 and I'm 46 now.

I did a fair bit of soloing down south and on the gritstone once I moved up here. But only stuff that felt completely in control. Having the right conditions and the right mindset. It is amazing when you're in the zone and you just know....

But now I'm way more like you. Had a serious injury in Fontainebleau a few years ago, shattered calcaneum, open fracture, ankle ligaments ruined. So I just bumble around like a punter. Still love it though.

Same. If I liked heights I would be more of a Philippe Petit kind of guy than a climber though. Except I would fall off and die.

I used to climb a bit, but what I did more was set up climbs for other people. I think the way to suppress that fear is to be 100% sure your safe. I would feel safe in my own set up our great placement but would be less comfortable on other people's. Especially people I didn't know so well.

This also transfers into confidence in one's own climbing ability. The more you climb the more you trust your abilities, balance, grip and strengths.
