Haven't been able to face having a Mr Whippy after a slightly off taste to one in Hastings a couple of years ago. Binned it rather than finish it to be safe despite the man in the van insisting it was OK, but was still wiped out with some major...um...discomfort...for the rest of the weekend.

That will have been a Mr Wipey.

I don't sell ice cream in my seafront shop, yet, but others nearby do. Imagine Pride 2019 and after 364 days of paying rent, rates and other expenses the shops stock up on ice creams only for a van to park yards from their shops and take all the trade. There was almost a major punch up before the van got the hint and shifted. But it happens a lot. Street sellers with these popping toys (2021 trend) who have zero costs involved. Walk along Brighton prom and see the sellers with zero cost selling stuff meanwhile my costs keep going up.
You can’t complain about cheaper competition on here it doesn’t go down well.

The sandwich van we have come to work plays the Benny Hill music. As I am in the minority of knowing what it is, it makes me feel VERY old. Before that, we had one that played the Golden Wonder - they're Jungle Fresh music. Sure they are just taunting me.

Is that the one that goes around the Industrial Estates in Burgess Hill?

I often hear the one that drops into the Sheddingdean estate every day........definitely not Benny Hill. Annoying me now that I can’t remember what it is. Thanks. :annoyed:

The one that I hear on the Victoria estate is probably meant to be a version of Yakkety Sax but it is so poor it takes a while to work it out. Maybe it is deliberately bad to avoid paying the rights!

Ok, I've got to ask as I've never heard the term before and apparently I'm the only one: but what the ****'s a 'karen' - apart from being an unfashionable girl's name? Is it something to do with the resistance in Myanmar? (Burma)

Personally I would not buy ice cream from a van . For two reasons , almost all these vans are unlicensed so are taking away business from local businesses, secondly because they are unlicensed they don’t have to bother complying with health and safety rules . You may think how is that going to effect ice creams - actually it does because these vans make most of their profit from selling Mr Wipeys which is a poor quality powder full of additives and colouring that is then mixed with a milk liquid in the machine that produces the ice cream .

The nozzle that the ice cream comes out of should be cleaned every few minutes to ensure no build up of bacteria , I doubt they get cleaned that regularly !

From a health point of view , it’s also far better to eat a reasonable quality ice cream made with cream , eggs etc the type sold by Morocco’s etc rather than a powder variety .

I understand if you live in the sticks you might not have much choice for ice cream when you are going for a walk but there’s no excuse in Hove , there’s plenty of places along the seafront .

I bet you're a right hoot at parties !

Wow. Thanks. As a term of divisive abuse it does seem to be absolutely fantastic though as one useage can apparently set off a whole sub-argument as to whether it's sexist or not, and thus an argument can be extended well past its original parameters keeping everybody frothing nicely.

Anyway I think if the woman wanted to make a point she should have done it before the OP made their purchase, i.e. if she was so worried about illegal trading she should have set up a picket. Regardless though in these situations I prefer the old-fashioned gender-neutral term of 'busybody'.

Agree, these businesses pay a huge rental no doubt to trade which goes into the public coffers to pay for public services let alone the people they employ so while they are robbing the business owner they are also depriving the general public..

Some describe the term as being sexist, ageist, misogynistic, or seeking to control female behaviour, I’m still undecided though.
