Hope you dont mind Mr countryman, i just corrected a couple of mistakes.

The Monarchy helps the taxpayer. Yes, they use a lot of the taxpayer's money, but they make a lot more with it for the taxpayer. Just think of all the money that comes in through tourism because of the Royal Family. And it is not just money they bring to this country, but they also bring a lot of happiness. Think of how many people are going to be out having street parties during the diamond jubilee. People will be socialising neighbours that they never normally talk to. They find out that their neighbour is more then just an annoying person who watches the X Factor at a volume which enables to you to hear it down the road.

I don't think we need a head of state selected by the same medieval method used by North Korea to make us better neighbours.

To me, the central point that royalists allway miss, or ignore, is that the royals have absolutely no right to a single penny from the taxpayers. as they have never been asked to do this job, never elected, selected or chosen in anyway remotely acceptable in what is suposed to be a democracy. The only taxpayers money they are entitled to is JSA.

Tourism revenue is not only irrelevant to a debate about our constitution, the suggestion that the monarchy promotes tourism is also untrue. There is not a single shred of evidence to back this up. Of the top 20 tourist attractions in the UK only one royal residence makes it: Windsor Castle at number 17 (beaten comfortably by Windsor Legoland, in at number 7). Royal residences account for less than 1% of total tourist revenue. Indeed, the success of the Tower of London (number 6 in the list) suggests that tourism would benefit if Buckingham Palace and Windsor castle were vacated by the Windsor family.
The British tourist industry is successful and robust - castles and palaces would remain a part of our heritage regardless of whether or not we have a monarchy (look at Versaille). Other attractions, such as the London Eye, Trafalgar Square, the west end, Bath, Stonehenge, Britain's beautiful countryside and so on, will continue to attract tourists in the same numbers as they do today. The government body responsible for tourism, Visit Britain, hasn't even collated statistics on the monarchy as an attraction, which shows it is not a key factor in the promotion of the UK as a tourist destination.

The tourism argument has been dreamt up to distract people from the real issues. There is no evidence that the monarchy is good for tourism, in fact, there are good reasons why the opposite might be true. Imagine the potential for Buckingham Palace if it was fully opened up to tourists all year round, where visitors can explore every room and courtyard and see the grounds and the magnificent art collection. And of course popular ceremonies such as the changing of the guard will continue.

Not bothered reading the thread but am just a bit peeved that it looks like the whole holiday will be taken up with various groups coming down to have a jolly (demo) at the expence and inconvenince of us locals. I get really annoyed when I hear some middle-class workshy oik telling me that "Brighton doesn't want...." when they often aren't from here anyway.

I also wish the police would not turn up en mass because that's all that adds to the sport for most of rent-a-mob. Leave the demonstartors to themselves and see if fisticuffs really happen or if people really think they can block a road whenbuses 7 cars want to get through. Didn't some EDO protesters once roam into Moulsecoomb?

Unless I see the actual figures related to Tourism I refuse to believe it. The Royal Palaces I've visited abroad are full of tourists, but that's because you get full access because the families pissed off / were removed years ago.

As for happiness ? Not in this household. I managed to completely avoid the Royal Wedding until getting home late that night, I discovered they were having a Royal Party complete with bunting.



So no, I will be completely avoiding the nonsense.

Im at uni, so we dont even get the bank holidays off...

So no. If anything im more annnoyed that everyone will be having fun and im stuck in lectures and tuorials (I do a science course before you start, and have 7 hours a day)

What you go to university on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, Easter Sunday and the August Bank Holiday - you doing the science of feeling sorry for yourself

A change is as good as a rest. Maybe its time to again appoint someone from abroad to be the monarch for no good reason again. It worked for William of Orange.. or we could do a show trial and put her on trial for treason like Charles 1. Obviously we stop short at a full scale execution. Time to shake things up a bit tho', as that would get the tourists in...
