I used to walk round all day with a chit of paper in my hand as I was storeman for my WE Dept and visit all the canteens in the dockyard and no one ever asked any questions to what I was doing,then on Fridays it was down to the Home Club for the Four O'Clock Club:drink: :drink: :drink:

chatham was a nightmare too with train lines. do you remember the dit about a docky who was pushing his pushbike to the dockyard main gate. he was asked by the mod plods to stop as they knew he was knicking something. he put his bike down and he had to have his bags searched. the mod plods found nothing.
he attempted to lift up his bike but he couldnt because he had filled the frame with mercury. he got knicked :lolol:

mod plods = dockyard coppers
dit = story

If you had a piece of paper in your hand, you were working.

before guzz dockyard was taken over by dml you could do some really good deals with 200 ciggies and a tin of coffee. i once got a whole spare set of my main roof (wire aerials) which, believe me, was an excellent deal from a jan dockie :clap:

I had a packet of Gold Leaf which when empty then held the blue liners my ex used to give me so that I wasn't seen smoking duty frees.

What struck me is the contrast with the recent series about the Army.

Army life seems to be incredibly ... er ... regimented. Everyone knowing their place in a strict hierarchy. And not much trust and co-operation in evidence across the boundaries of rank.

The Navy, in contrast, seemed much more laid back and informal.

Or was it simply two different styles of film-maker?

Well spotted Lord B. I did 26 years, (finished in Feb) & I can honestly say I loved (nearly) every minute of it. Once you finish your part 1 training (learning about bullshit) then it's all about learning your chosen trade/branch. Once on a ship life is very relaxed as long as you remember the 3 golden rules.
1. Right Place
2. Right Rig
3. Right Time
Once you crack that, it's a piece of piss & you make some of the best mates you could wish for.
Oh yes, you will never laugh so much in your life!!!!
