Well, there goes my prediction of Clarke to win with the sympathy vote, nice speach by Mrs Hunter...but why did she have to wear white undercrackers...where are Trinny and Suzannah when you need them?

To be fair to Zara Phillips, she has had to overcome considerable adversity to get where she is today.

It takes so much dedication- putting in all those hours of practice while holding down an exhausting full time job, SOMEHOW finding the funding in what's a very expensive sport despite her minimal income and underprivileged background, and all this while Britain's playing fields and sporting arenas are being continually bulldozed. I mean, she probably had to practice on Streatham Common, such is the lack of proper facilities for horse related activity...when do you EVER see town councils announcing plans for new gymkhanas, after all?

Good on her, a classic plucky British rags to riches story.

:p

Abort, retry, fail
Four points....

1) How did McClaren think we had got over the post honeymoon blues with that performance against Holland???

2) Hello? Mr St Helens dude!? "To finish ahead of the Ryder Cup team is fantastic".....Erm....*cough*....Sussex? Did you not finish ahead of them!? Were they not worthy of a mention!?

3) Zara Phillips

4) Lots of moving tributes - Elmore Woods, Paul Hunter, Heather Clarke... RIP

The great British public need shooting.

Team of the year – St Helens? Who are they and what sport do they play? Rugby League? Why don’t we reward 2nd Brighton scouts for being great at Bulldog? Pathetic. Ryder Cup team should have won that one by a mile.

Zara Phillips. Please. Show ponies or whatever it is she does is the elitist of elitist sports I can think of. What did she win, a Jump off against Baron Von Nurmebourg of Germany? Cleared a couple of fences without knocking them down? Lets face it, if she was an ugly, common munt, she wouldn’t have even made the shortlist.

Next year I won’t bother.

If you mention Sussex CCC's County Championship triumph to any Lancastrian they automatically go into "Is it fair that we lost the title simply because of the weather in Manchester?" mode.

Don't play in Manchester then you stupid morons-find somewhere in Lancashire where it doesn't rain as much. Unfortunately, you'd then be on a par with us attendance wise and you'd struggle to pay the wages of the big name players meaning you'd probably be relegated on a regular basis.

Bloody northerners.....

Christ on a bike, I'm not even THAT anti-royal but find it extraordinary that the age of deference is so clearly alive and well in 2006. Unbelievable. *tugs forelock*

In hindsight St Helens was probably the right team to win. They did the rugby league equivilent of the Premiership, FA Cup and League Cup in one season, a feat never (I dont think) been done by an English football team. If Sussex had won the Pro 40 then it should have been closer. I still maintain it should be voted for by experts not the public.

Ryder Cup team stuffed the Yanks - yes - but it was quite easy this year compared to other years.

Its time BBC dropped the "personality" bit though to sportsperson of the year

Oh yes and overseas personality -

Tiger Woods - cos his dad died
Roger Federa - cos he's done the same last year that he did the year before and the year before.

What about the only player to take 100 wickets this year - not even an afterthought in the whole evening

what a pathetic post that is!

fair enough calling for mushy to be in with a shout but u cannot deny the other two have had exceptional years again!

 Roger Federer:bowdown:

For a foreign sports award to be decided by the BBC to give people a choice of two is rubbish. Woods got the sympathy vote (as did Darren Clarke who probably would have won the main award had the NOTW not made sure he didnt)

but Tiger Woods has won numerous tournaments yet again and proved able to maintain his class at the top level...

Federer also has won so many tournaments including 3 slams...

fully deserved in my view...

I'd hazard a guess that there's quite a few guys who have much more attractive girlfriends and/or wives and wouldn't want to give her one.

I'll start the ball rolling by saying I wouldn't - and I'm not renowned for being fussy either.

Can't see it myself. she's nothing special, if she wasn't part of royalty, she probably be working in ASDA.
