Much needed and welcome move. But why dont they just be honest and now say it's Plan B?

I'm the engineer on site at the train depot for the BBC today, maybe I could leave a strategic note saying "HS3 - Brighton to Falmer" :D

It's just another way for the tories to hand out money to their mates - at our expense. The train companies will get better profits, network rail gets a freebie, the construction people make a mint.

This is normally referred to as money-laundering............unfortunately, it's with our money

My all-time favourite Service Alteration poster was the one that appeared over Christmas a few years back.

"On 27 December, the 0915 train from Brighton to Manchester Piccadilly will start from Portsmouth Harbour and operate to Liverpool Lime Street".

At one time, Virgin had a plan to run an hourly fast service from Brighton to the West Coast Main Line (Birmingham and Manchester) - but this was scuppered by the (then) Strategic Rail Authority who wanted any spare capacity on the Brighton Main Line to be dedicated to more frequent Brighton - London services.

This latest electrification announcement, together with improved capacity through the Thameslink tunnel offers the option of extending the Brighton - Bedford service to Sheffield, as well as the introduction of regular Brighton - Peterborough services (for interchange on to Kings Cross - Newcastle / Edinburgh trains without the need to set foot in London).

On a slightly different theme, my favourite ever tannoy announcement at a train station was at East Croydon: "Due to a problem with the annoucements system, there will be no announcements".
