If the government are announcing this, I assume they/we are paying for it.

So, tell again, why were they privatised?

Unless part of the investment is doubling the train from 2 to 4 lines between Three Bridges and Brighton, then there won't be any longer distance trains, as the Brighton to London bit can't cope as it is.

I'd also like to pre-empt TMLS on this. They could start with investing in some trains whose doors actually f***ing work properly...

Think they did a Brighton to Manchester route, don't know why it stopped though ??

Something about a track being rerouted i think at kensington olympia and there wasnt space for the brighton to manchester trains to work around other services on the schedule.
Was only cancelled in 2009 aswell i think. And maybe im not thinking straight but im sure there was a service also that went up to Edingburgh, i dont know about from Brighton but i used to get the train from redhill to go to school and im sure on the time tables there was a twice weekly train up to scotland.

NB work starts in 2014 so plenty of time to cancel as times are tough etc etc

Why do the government fund the railways when they're all private? Surely the people who own them should be investing the money. The government should at least have some sort of say with what the rail companies do after an investment of this size.
