The BBC’s Saving Lives At Sea tonight, about the RNLI, included a couple of channel rescues in the middle of a shipping lane. Literally at sea level it hit home how frightening and dangerous it is on the inflatables …. it just takes small waves or a swell, to make the passage effectively blind even on a sunny day.

Aside from the politics, I hope the French courts dish out big sentences to the organised gang leaders running this. Putting lives at danger, without giving a ****.

On the TV tonight, one of the French police said that they are not allowed to go into the water. They also claim to be under staffed and under equipped. What a mess !

The other night on the news, they showed a french police officer just walk up to a boat as they were loading it, and ram a breadknife into it. The boat deflated, and everyone sloped off before it had gone 10 yards. Job done.

Don't need much equipment if they employ that tactic on the beaches.

I see no thread on Sunk's new declaration that we are going to spend, spend, spend to become the world's most super-armed nation in Europe. Only we are no longer in Europe. So that's even better. With a Labour government to do the spending, obviously.

Does this man even have straw in his head? My money is on space dust and chewing gum wrappers.

Probably on the vast Tory threads.

[Unsure if you if you don’t mean what you say?].

The majority of NSC isn’t keen on talking about Putin waging genocide, mass rape and illegal wars, or the threats from Iran or China in spreading increasing armed and intelligence war on the West. Whilst the Uyghurs get mentioned about once every 5 years. To counter the rise of fascism from China, Iran and Russia, like it or not, the West is upping military spending to counter the advance.

I await the inevitable, “Putin and Iran, they’re alright” retorts from one or two. Whilst politicians get murdered in Russia, Russia run torture chambers in another nation Ukraine, the religious police in Iran rape and murder women.

It's almost as if we're talking about real people.

Wow those French police really bust a gut to stop that boat leaving today. FFS. This is where the problem lies.

Whilst I entirely agree is there actually any laws in France to allow the police to seize and impound the boat? Something such as “overloaded vessel unfit for seafaring” or similar? Or are the French police under instruction to allow them to leave so as to pass on the responsibility of the migrants to Britain, thus turning a blind eye to any infringement.

I think that sadly, at the moment, we do need to increase defence spending. We just need to avoid all the jingoistic nonsense that goes with it and deploy resources sensibly.

I think the RAF has 10 heavy drones to the USA’s 500. It’s not really a deterrent.

So how many of the people smugglers are being sent to Rwanda, or is it easier to punish the vulnerable victims?
