[Football] BBC Chairman says show fewer highlights on MOTD

I think MOTD is missing a trick.

I think there is a gap in the market for a top quality terrestrial analysis show.

I would keep MOTD as it is but then immediately follow it with a separate show - 'MOTD In-Depth' with top journalists, ex-pros - to give the best analysis, like a cross between Neville and Carragher with Sunday Supplement. No studio audience bollocks.
Possibly on iPlayer?

It's a disgra...

No wait, I only watch (skip through) to see what they say about Albion - and, even then, only if we win/draw, typically.

I watch highlights in advance on YouTube.

I can see how many folk (my dad) just want an easy-to-watch show.. but that means more action and less chat.

I know I am probably in the minority here but I try to avoid other results on a Saturday so quite enjoy watching MOTD without knowing any other result than the Albion's.

I usually record it on a Saturday night and watch it when I get up on Sunday morning so generally skip the analysis apart from the Albion game.

The most important thing is that it feels like a mug of Horlicks.

The actual balance between highlights & punditry is virtually irrelevant, except that everyone wants to have an opinion on it.

First step towards MOTD 2027/28 where 4 ex players sit around a subbuteo pitch with the figures kitted out in the colours of the teams from the match they are giving a tactical insight to.

They move the players about to show well one team defended or counter attacked, or flooded midfield. With cameras showing this from various angles.

And then the highlight, where the ex players replicate the goals scored in the afternoon game by flicking the players, with one ex player taking on the role of the goalkeeper

No actual footage from the game is shown.

Bound to increase the viewing figures.

It's realistically impossible for even the sharpest of minds, let alone Danny Murphy to get an understanding of the patterns of play in 6ish games.
Magnificently worded!

I don't really have much to add otherwise, I think the thread has it covered. I personally think the age of former professionals filling up the sofas should be over, there are all sorts of analysts and data scientists who would have a much more interesting point of view to add.

Personally, I'd like to see an MOTD as it is. A version which has no commentary and no punditry (15 mins highlights per game, 20 if it's a cracker). Just a pure football experience. And then a version which includes chat from former professionals keeping their hand in the game. There is value in listening to people's opinions, even Danny Murphy's, but it's a shame it's always required. There are also plenty of times when there's nothing to say, but they have to crack on anyway and that tends to lead to a meltdown from Roy Keane.

The difference in analysis between MOTD on Saturday night and MOTD2 on Sunday night is "chalk and cheese". Granted on a Saturday night there are more games to pack in, but with Lineacre at the helm it's just become who can come up with the best pun. Chappers on a Sunday night asks a lot more questions of the analysts, but then with only 2/3 games they've got more time for said analysis and maybe that's what the Director General was getting at....

Rather have more highlights, less drivel and banter. Annoys me that half the interesting incidents in our games never make the highlights. If we beat one if the big 4 or 5 they limit it to our goals only and show endless chances for the team we beat.

If we beat a traditional big team which we do regularly now it’s always what went wrong with the Man City’s, Spurs, United’s etc with a squeezed in Brighton played well and zero analysis into our tactics.

Which is to be expected, given that people are generally most interested in the fortunes of their own team, and the relative number of fans of each club.

BBC Sounds does a weekly PL Review of all the games with Darren Fletcher
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p0kx5ltf (Albion/ Fulham bit at 34.30)

For instant takes on our games then there’s the post match analysis/final whistle with Johnny and Warren Aspinall on Final Whistle style after every game on Sounds

And more in depth analysis of the match on the weekly Albion Unlimited
- there’s audio highlights and interviews on that feed too almost daily.

In all honesty, who waits for MotD anymore to see the highlights? Most of them are on YouTube by the time I get home form the game anyway. I watch the extended highlights irrespective of whether I watched MotD, but I do watch to see what they have to say about us.

Personally, I'd like more analysis but I also want better pundits to conduct said analysis, not just some ex-pros bantering each other.

Unless we've lost, in which case I don't watch or listen to anything, except maybe Albion Unlimited
Me

Everyone's in bed, sit down with a nice cup of decaf and watch MOTD. End to a lovely Saturday usually.

I don't want to see any highlights before. Done a few days where I've avoided the results and that is even better.

We live in this weird world where everyone wants things INSTANTLY. It's one of the very few old school things I try and sit down for at the right time.
