Bats in the roof

Does anyone have any experience of bats in their home? well roof space.

The house I'm thinking of buying has them in the loft. Owing to their protected species status it isn't just a case of gassing the f@ckers and hauling them out, apparently we're not permitted to interfere with their habitat and that could mean that extending into the roof is not possible.

We have a ecological specialist attending next week to report on the numbers and species and I'm told it might take 4 weeks to get the results and they may report that envelopment in the roof is not allowed without me causing a criminal offence. This is beginning to sound like a nightmare, and I'm tempted to cut my losses and pull out.

I'm from a planning background and bats are rarely a reason to prohibit development but you do need to get it checked out by a qualified ecologist, disturbing them or removing them yourself would be a criminal offence. Depending on what you want to do to the property and whether it requires planing permission you might need to look at putting up bat boxes etc.

What harm are they doing other than causing an inconvenience to yourself? We had bats in the roof of our old house here and we hardly ever noticed them. You may just have to go up and clear the sh12 occasionally.

Is the current property owner a multi-millionaire that is quite secretive and disappears most nights?

Does the property have an old bookcase that's permanently fixed to the wall?

Does the current property owner have a butler, maybe 60 odd years old?

Amazing isn't it? Bats don't choose to be born bats and yet the OP talks about them as if they're some kind of commodity to be gassed. I hope he gets reincarnated as a bat and some stupid self-interested human who finds him an inconvenience comes along and decides to 'gas the ****er'

But then by the same token, wasps don't choose to be born wasps do they. Yet nobody would shed a tear if a wasps nest was gassed, because as we all know, wasps are complete and utter scum.

Anyway, I'd hope the OP could live with his furry little lodgers in collision-free harmoney. If the roof needs extending into then perhaps another property which doesn't need that kind of work done would be a better choice anyway.

Hi, thanks. Whilst I'm not, I'm more of an Environmental consultant, we have ecologists here who'd be happy to help. PM me if you need contact details - I'm sure they would be happy to give free advice. Sounds like you already have ecologists involved though (may well be us).

My thoughts are why are people so annoyed with the thought of animals inconveniencing them? I'd buy a house BECAUSE there were bats in the roof.
