The result should be known by 5am. This has been a uniquely fractious three way fight.

Violence and intimidation throughout. Kim Leadbeater (Jo Cox’s sister) and the Labour candidate, has tonight condemned this.

George Galloway parachuted himself in on a hard left and pro Islam ticket, candidly to destroy Starmer.

Before it even got going, Diane Abbott said a Labour loss should spell curtains for Starmer.

Bizarrely, the very longstanding Kashmiri conflict has been a key issue. Parties flip-flopping to claim their passion for the Islamic cause, whilst slagging off rival parties as being pro India.

Not a great moment for democracy.

I'm not sure that Kashmir should be seen as an 'Islamic cause'. Forgive me if I'm miss-reading it.

But, yes, I was a bit reserved about watching a Daily Telegraph piece about the election, given their leanings, but it was actually very balanced and rather good.

I was rather shocked by parties trying to be all things, or no things, and fanning the flames further. I was also quite shocked about the ignorance among voters from all sides.

What a bizarre and complex by-election.

Labour essentially at war with itself whilst the Tories favourites to nick it despite having the worst administration in decades and decades. And they are talking about India on the doorsteps?

It never ceases to amaze me how Galloway pours himself into difficult political constituencies like petrol hoping for more self promotion whilst all around him burns with the chaos and hate he has manufactured. What an awful human being.

Ironically, there is a type of northern voter who does not take kindly to Asian men screaming abuse at white women around trying to stop the teaching British values (the tolerance one) at school, I doubt they’ll be voting Tory this time round.

My union (and I'm not exactly part of the artisan sector) has one motion up and coming for next week. A lecturerer of Palestinian origin, supporterd by a very junior member of staff who specialises in marxist georaphy ( I shit u not) wants our union to pass a motion to boycott anything and anyone associated with the very worst and most evil nation on earth...think about it for a moment...

Israel!

I will be speaking against the motion but expect to lose the vote and...

After 32 years in the union I will resign and they can **** right off.

I will update. Honestly you couldn't make this shit up. It would be like England recalling Alan (Arsenal) Smith. Now. For the Ukranial game. Imagine

Labour's Kim Leadbeater has won the Batley and Spen by-election after a closely-fought campaign, with a narrow majority of 323.

Great result for Kim Leadbeater, not so great for the Labour Party, a loss would surely have meant Sir Kneel standing down and making way for Andy Burnham.
Congratulations to Kim, despite some vey nasty Islamist intimidation.

Well a victory for decency. But not really a great result for Labour, 20% for Galloway, pfff...

Surely this action is the end result of elected government failing to challenge the Israeli government about its actions and deeds over the last 40 years or so?
I'm not fully conversant on all the issues in the region but it's pretty obvious that there are terrible injustices occurring in the region that have been allowed to continue.

In the social media connected world we live in these days it is easier for disparate groups of people to organise and combine and create a pressure group that can gain global attention see, Thunberg, G and BLM.

I agree that your union voting to take a stance against the Israelis is a bit like the scene in The Holy Grail where the Peoples Front of Judea, ( Executive Committee), end up voting for Stan's right to have a baby.

However, is our current PM likely to attempt a new diplomatic breakthrough or organise a global alliance to try to force some change fir the better in the Middle East? We all know his fame as a " Details Man ". Obviously he will stay well away from any real criticism of Israel as there is nothing in it for him. So, in this vacuum people and pressure groups form.

So although the unions actions seem stupid and misguided I think this is a good example of a respected NSC regulars opinion that " life and society is getting better and better " [emoji106][emoji6][emoji16].

Are they proposing a boycott of Israeli academics, Harry ? That’s actually quite shocking. So if there is an important research development these people would ignore it ?

Well done Kim Leadbeater. The only local and one campaigning to make things better (on the whole anyway) which she would be forgiven not to after what happened to her sister and the pelters directed her way. Galloway and the hard left need to form their own party of hate before Labour eats itself though. Vile individual.

Let’s hope the next bit of good news to come out of Batley and Spen is that the teacher that is in fear of his life, for daring to show a cartoon of a fictional character is free to get on with the job he loves.

Batley & Spen by-election

Here is where Labour’s majority went:

“Labour and Respect MP George Galloway third with 8,264, There was the fact that George Galloway stood here and he took 8,000+ votes from traditional Labour voters in the Asian community, which is fairly sizeable in Batley and Spen.”

Galloway parachuted in on a mission to dethrone Starmer and almost succeeded. He whipped up hate and anger in the Muslim community dividing voters very much like Johnson and Farage have done in the past. Instead of Brexit, Labour lost votes on their perceived stance on Kashmir and teaching children about homosexuality. This cost Labour a significant majority in a constituency that was blue in the 80’s & 90’s until Blair came along and changed the Labour Party and politics.

Excellent result for the Labour Party. Conservatives had the advantage of: still paying wages of % of the electorate through furlough, the vaccine bounce, plenty of division surrounding Islam to exploit and George Galloway splitting the Labour vote. They still couldn’t win. A victory for hope and the belief that we have more in common than divides us.

What an idiotic motion. Especially in academia where collaboration is so critical. Hopefully it will be massively defeated.
