I think it's one of those incidents that if you've never played, you could think it was accidental (such as Naylor etc. saying stuff like 'he was looking at the ball'). Anyone who has played the game will know Barton knew what he was doing because in that moment you sort of instinctively know where the person is and where you're foot is going down. Barton knew what he was doing, but also knew how to make it look accidental.

That's an easy one. He was bending down to pick the ball up because the referee's whistle had gone for the push in the back, which is why the free kick had been given.

(The whistle blew while he was in the air, hovering to see where Kayal was going to put his knee before deciding where to land.)

Jesus...

Can nobody from Burnley actually see? I find it impossible to believe that ANYONE can watch that incident and not think that it was intentional. And then he mimed a diving motion at the ref, to add insult to injury.

Next, he was to be found faking injury when he elbowed Kayal.

Barton lived up to his hype at the weekend. He is a cowardly thug, and somehow Craig Pawson saw fit to indulge him. If he played for us there is no way that we would be giving him the support that Burnley fans are.

Players like him, and teams like Burnley, will kill the game.

Quite perversely, I bet you've convinced yourself that's the truth.

Face it - if he was playing for someone else, and he did that to one of your players, you'd be livid. As it is, you're defending a coward, a hypcrite and a liar. Well done, you.

...

He was faking injury because of the fairly common referee viewpoint of judging the severity of a foul, or even whether or not is is a foul, based on the reaction of the injured player. Some refs will see one man down injured, one man not, and assume a foul. If you're the man not injured, you lie down until the ref's instinct to wave a card has died down. (Maybe not necessary in this case, he wasn't card-happy.)

As you no doubt noticed, both players lead with their elbows. Barton jumped higher, which is why his elbow made contact with the head, and your man's elbow made no contact at all, or if there was contact, with the body where it didn't matter. IMO it was an accidental elbow and worth a possible yellow, which he got away with.

Contrary to popular opinion, Burnley aren't a dirty side. Or if we are, the 31 bookings and 2 sendings off that Brighton have earned over and above what Burnley have earned, must be the product of a lot of bent refs! (We have 39 booked, Brighton 70 booked & 2 off, according to Sporting Life).

The elbow might have been a yellow, for any normal ref that is. The stamp is as clear a red that anyone with a pair of eyes and a brain can compute.

I remember in our first season at the amex we had a lot of yellow and red cards. There was something weird about it though. While not every yellow card is for a foul, there is a clear correlation between number of fouls committed and yellow cards received. That season there were two teams that didn't follow the same pattern as the other 22 teams in the division. Southampton, who got significantly fewer cards than you would expect given the number of fouls they committed, and us, who received more yellow cards than expected for the number of fouls committed.

Another weird quirk of that season, is that "Brighton's Opponents" committed more fouls, collected more yellow cards. Every week we'd see opponents foul more than us, collect more cards than us, and yet we were statistically the dirtiest team. Refs became card happy in our games, and of course we were in all 46 of our games that season, so had a high baseline, whereas our opponents only faced us twice each, so their baselines were lower and just had blips in the games they faced us.

I haven't looked at this season's cards/fouls ratio in detail, but comparing us to our opponents it looks pretty even. We average 1.8 yellow cards a game, our opponents 1.7, we average 0.05 reds, our opponents 0.10. We only commit about 1 and a half fouls more per game than our opponents (11 to 9.36).

Besides, I don't think many of us believe your team is dirty. Just Barton.

The stamp was cynical; disguised as accidental. Virgo called it right on FLS. No surprises that no further action as Pawson would have had to say he didn't see it and therefore own up to his incompetence; far easier to rely on the assertion (whether true or not) that he did see and decided no action.

Move on - we could be back 2nd this time tomorrow. Not a time to dwell on might have beens.

You're an utter embarrassment, just like your precious cheating player and your precious cheating manager. Be on you way now, whilst you still have chance.

Burnley aren't a dirty side and I haven't seen reports of Barton being dirty this season. However, on Saturday he faced something he hasn't faced very often this year, he was a long way second best to a midfield opponent. Kayal looked faster, stronger and cleverer than Barton. Barton's reaction was petulance. The stamp seemed to be done because Kayal had been much better than Barton and he simply didn't like it. Perhaps somewhere at the back of his mind he realised that, for all the good he has done Burnley this year, Dyche won't think twice about replacing him with someone as good as Kayal upon promotion, knowing that, although a very decent Championship midfielder, Joey will no longer cut it in the top league.

By the way, we have picked up a lot of cards this year, but we are not dirty either. We have got a lot of players who want to have their say, and we do pick up a few 'taking one for the team' bookings as playing with two winger and two strikers can lead to times when the defence is left exposed. On this note, the thing that amazed me at the time about one of the Kayal / Barton clashes is that Pawson appeared to let play go on with them both on the deck because Brighton had the advantage. Play was then stopped by a blatantly deliberate foul by a Burnley defender, exactly the sort of foul that we have picked up a lot of bookings for this year. The defender scurried off and when Pawson had dealt with Kayal and Barton, he apparently forgot that an obvious bookable offence had been committed. He really was awful throughout the game.

Spot on with all of this. I haven't had time to trawl through all the Barton threads, but the incident you refer to looked like another Barton 'challenge' that deserved closer attention from the referee.

Seems a strange justification of your man faking an injury...Barton came down here with QPR a couple of seasons back, in my eyes he was MOM despite us winning 2/0 ...Saturday we saw a completely different player...the red mist descended upon him and he lost his cool...the well publicised Joseph Barton returned aided and abetted by a weak ref.
I don't see your side as dirty at all you got a deserved equaliser in view of the mistake by one of the linesman ..however you should have been down to ten men long before then and the chances are you would have struggled to get that equaliser ...still that's football....another game tomorrow night and then we move on...that's football

I don't think Burnley are a dirty side, but with Barton, Barnes and Boyd in the squad, I would imagine someone catches an elbow most games.

I really hope Pawson doesn't ref us again anytime soon. And Darren Deadman, the 4th Official, was just as bad. If they saw the stamp how can they say it warranted no action? (especially given Pawson sent off Barnes three seasons ago for a similar but much less blatant foul).
