Premier League footballer Joey Barton has admitted assaulting a former team-mate in a training ground row.

The Newcastle United midfielder was due to go on trial at Manchester Minshull Crown Court over the incident.

The 25-year-old changed his plea shortly before the scheduled start.

He attacked Ousmane Dabo during a training ground bust-up on 1 May last year when both played for Manchester City.

am I right in thinking though that it was Barton who was retained and then sold for a Queen's ransom while the victim, Dabo was released from his contract by Man City?

Kinda makes you wonder about football and the priorities it represents

Apparently the reason he admitted it was because the judge said he would then get a suspended sentance.

How the f*** does someone get a suspended sentance even though after the actual incident (although admitedly before the court case) he assaults somebody else and gets locked up? Surely the fact you are already in prison for something else invalidates your right to get a suspended sentance?

Nope.

This is one of the slightly crap things about the criminal justice system in this country.

Even when there's a stack of evidence against them, defendants will frequently plead not guilty until the last possible moment, in the hope that something will happen- like a witness not turning up for court- which might make the CPS decide it's not in the public interest to adjourn the case, and scrap it instead.

Which means that many, many hours of police, CPS, court and witness time are wasted, not to mention a whole lot of public money, putting together a full case file, as opposed to the shorter file you get if the defendant pleads guilty at an early stage.

As soon as the defendant realises all the witnesses have turned up for the court date, he changes his plea to guilty, then expects to receive some credit towards his sentence in exchange for that.

By which time the civilian and/or police witnesses may have been sitting in a court waiting room all day, taking time off work etc etc, only to be told they're not needed after all.

IMHO you should get absolutely bugger all credit for a guilty plea if entered at that late stage, because of the cost to the taxpayer of having to arrange a trial.

Agreed-some merit should be placed on early guilty pleas but nothing on last minute.
